September is?Leukemia, Lymphoma and Myeloma Awareness Month. Though not as popular as other awareness months, like Diabetes or AIDS, significant progress has been made in educating the public on blood cancer diseases?which are diagnosed in an American every four minutes. In October, local Atlantans can show their support of the efforts at the annual Light The Night?Walk.
Widely supporting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS), the annual Light The Night event is one of the largest contributors to non-profit blood cancer research. Much promotion and publicity is given to Light The Night, which coordinates walks in various cities across the US, because it allows the LLS to provide more than $20 million in financial aid and co-pay assistance to cancer patients yearly.
The casual fundraising walk is open to everyone from children and adults to seniors! Participants can either walk individually or as a part of a family/corporate team. The two-mile walk usually takes less than an hour and is done at a leisurely pace?remaining fun and unifying!? Each person is encouraged to becoming a Champion for the Cures by raising $100 or more as an individual or as a part of the team! Most recently, higher met fundraising goals, equal great incentives for individuals & teams.
Special Light the Night features include: a themed Light The Night T-shirt, wrist bands for food, prizes and entertainment, and the popular illuminated balloons?white for survivors, red for supporters and gold in memory of loved ones lost to cancer ? which participants can carry during the walk.
The significance of Light The Night brings an evening of inspiration to every city that hosts the walk, bringing light to the dark unawareness of blood cancer.
Volunteer your time or money to making someone?s life a little bit brighter!
For those who can?t participate in the actual walk, there are many?volunteer opportunities?available to help behind the scenes!
