Are you eating your vegetables? This laser can tell you

11 hrs.

Invasive tests and unreliable recall make getting good information on food intake difficult for nutritionists and healthy eaters alike. A new device may allow doctors to tell how well you've been eating after doing nothing but shining a laser on your skin for 30 seconds.

It's well known among those in the field that what you eat can show externally ? and not just in your waistline?or smeared on your sleeve. As the body metabolizes certain things, like vegetables, some of the byproducts make their way to your skin, your hair, even your eyes. You are what you eat, and apparently you look like it too.

But only in subtle ways: a vegetable-rich diet will produce lots of what are known as skin carotenoids. They accumulate in the skin and can be measured to infer one's eating habits. But no one wants to give skin samples, and doctors would rather not waste time sending them in to the lab. Luckily, a chance meeting between two experts?produced something better.

Susan Mayne, a nutritional epidemiologist at Yale, happened to sit next to a laser physicist from the University of Utah on the way to a conference. By the time their?16-hour flight was over, they were drafting a grant proposal.

Using a technique called resonance Raman spectroscopy, results can be gotten in as little as a minute simply by shining a special blue laser on a person's palm and observing the results. Thirty seconds of laser, 30 seconds of processing on the computer, and your skin carotenoid levels are there for you and your doctor to talk about.

The test is non-invasive, cheap to administer and quick. It's so easy to use that one researcher managed to check the levels of 60 children in one afternoon. It could even be done while they napped.

It's not perfect; no one knows yet just how long it takes for the levels of carotenoids to build up or fade away in the skin, and they're not sure whether it will work on people with different levels of pigmentation in the skin. The technique?is promising and its?creators are already imagining many applications, but it's still in a fairly early phase and would face years of clinical testing before being deployed widely.

Health Insurance Infographics from HealthCompare Help Educate ...

HealthCompare, a health insurance comparison site, releases Infographics to help consumers understand complex data regarding health insurance difficulties.

Orange, California (PRWEB) May 29, 2012

HealthCompare, a nationally recognized health insurance comparison site, is releasing new tools in their attempt to help Americans who are in search of health insurance. HealthCompare, who consistently displays concern for consumers, asks visitors that come to their site to ask themselves a series of questions before attempting to find health insurance coverage. These questions are designed to help shoppers decipher what type of coverage is best for them in terms of cost and type of policy.

The questions that HealthCompare encourages consumers to ask themselves are:

What are the consumers current health care needs? Do they currently require medication? Does the consumer have a pre-existing condition? Or are they seeking to start a family in the near future?

Does the financial state of the shopper allow for a lower deductible, thusly giving them a higher monthly premium? Or would having a high deductible (and therefore lower monthly premium) be more beneficial?

Is the consumer?s physician a factor? If they prefer to continue seeing their doctor of choice, HealthCompare helps them decide what policies allow that.

Are there any other health insurance options for the shopper, such as spouse or parent plan?

Once consumers get their quotes, HealthCompare then helps them narrow their decisions by prompting them to ask further questions, like:

How much will the policies being compared cost them from their pocket when considering deductibles, co-insurance, and co-pays?

What will the policies being compared offer in terms of maximum out-of-pocket expense?

Will the consumer?s office visits be covered?

Do any of the policies up for comparison offer maternity?

Is prescription drug coverage an option?

How much will the consumer pay for emergency services and ambulances?

Will the current primary physician and local hospitals be accepted under any of the policies being considered?

Health insurance costs are much more involved than mere premiums and buyers must carefully consider all out of pocket expenses to understand what their policies will ultimately cost them. That is why HealthCompare generated these infographics.

Infographics are unique graphics that are growing in popularity across the web are known for utilizing images and colors to help make complex data from scientific reports, demographics, and studies to make them more easily understood by the casual reader. Reports such as the ones used in scientific studies often use jargon and unnecessary language that makes deciphering results difficult for those without the background for these terms. Infographics compress and compile numbers and meanings into aesthetically pleasing arrangements that illustrate rather than tell. They can also functionally layout arguments for debates, complex concepts or any other topic that could otherwise be considered difficult to understand.

These new graphics explain hardships that can effect consumers when it comes to medical coverage. HealthCompare is nationally recognized for caring about patient knowledge and choice. They want consumers to understand as much as possible when it comes to making decisions regarding coverage that suits their needs.

The infographics released are:

How To Find Affordable Individual Health Insurance ? Designed to direct and educate health insurance consumers find individual health insurance that?s more affordable

Buying Individual Health Insurance Effectively ? Designed to help today?s consumers choose health insurance that?s effective for them

Where To Look For The Cheapest Health Insurance ? Created to help shoppers find the cheapest health insurance for their needs

Gardening by Accident and Intention |

My hubby was working his way down his household to do list and decided it would be a good idea to replant the grass in the backyard so it would be ?just like a putting green?.? An ambitious goal for sure, since considering at the time of statement the yard looked like a muddy pit.

On the chosen afternoon, while backing the SUV down the driveway with the rented rototiller in the back?and the rear hatch open, he backed it up alright ? right into the jut out of the house and shattered the back window of the car.

Since the car was not in a condition to be driven, he could not return rototiller in a timely way.? Having a rototiller on hand gave him a new idea; a section of the back yard destined for an ornamental lawn became a garden. When life gives you lemons, make lemonade, or in this case: tomatoes, oregano, basil, thyme, eggplant, squash, cucumber, strawberries, and pumpkins.

A ?growing body? of research shows that fruits and vegetables are critical to promoting good health and preventing cardiovascular disease and certain cancers.? Most people need to increase the amount of fruits and vegetables they currently eat every day, and although the ideal amount of fruits and vegetables consumed depends upon the age and activity level of the person, the equivalent of seven to nine servings per day of a variety of fruits and vegetables is probably ideal.

Living in a neighborhood where grocery stores are plentiful and access to the farmers? markets is easy, I never gave any consideration to growing my own food. Yet with increasing concern over how food is grown and transported, I must say that I have become much picker over the years regarding my foods? source of origin.

Vegetable Garden Basics:

Where:? Planning a garden near your home in full sunlight is the normally the preferred location, however, drainage, soil quality, and shade from buildings or trees must be considered.? A growing vegetable garden must have at least six hours of full sun each day; fertilizer can?t compensate for lack of sun exposure and water. Usually, the garden should be surrounded by a removable fence with close mesh to keep out pets, and wild animals.? A fence also can serve as a trellis for beans, peas, and tomatoes ? plants that need supports to grow. Raised beds will keep the soil warmer.

What:?? Choosing which vegetables depend upon one?s personal preference, although lettuce, tomatoes, beans, and squash are popular choices for plantings at this time of year.

When:? Now (after the last frost is a general guideline ? but May is always a popular planting time).

How:? Ah like so many things the devil is in the details! One has to plan the garden, prepare the soil (testing and adjusting the soil PH), in addition to? paying? attention to the plant spacing, the depths of the plantings and germination times, while always being wary of insects and weeds.

Gardens and Children

Give your garden some thought, but not too much though, because like raising children, there will always be unexpected challenges along with the anticipation of joy.? You live by your experiences, and in growing a vegetable garden, like raising children, the more experiences the better.?? The saying ?you reap what you sow? applies both to harvests and families. Taking care and comfort in knowing that your dedicated attention will likely produce amazing? results both outside and inside your home for the health of your family. ?One has to be ?hands on? when both gardening and parenting because it is important to both the process and the outcome for each?multifaceted activity. So go ahead, plant a garden for health, and watch your family grow in many ways.

California is a Romney home state too

LA JOLLA ? David and Cristina Sear were walking their Doberman pinschers in this seaside neighborhood when a big U-Haul truck pulled up around the corner from the $12-million beachfront home Mitt and Ann Romney had just bought.

The driver could not negotiate the steep turn onto Dunemere Drive, a narrow cul-de-sac with no sidewalks.

"Wouldn't it be funny if Mitt Romney jumped out?" they joked, moments before Romney jumped out of the driver's side of the cab.

"We probably talked for 15 or 20 minutes," David Sear, a financial advisor, recalled recently. "We welcomed him and cautioned him that it was a blue neighborhood. He introduced me to his son Matt, and told me that he had quite a bit of fine art that he was uncomfortable having shipped, so he thought he and his son would spend some father-son time and go on a road trip from Utah to La Jolla."

Since that day a few years ago, the Romneys have become intermittently familiar sights around La Jolla. They have been spotted in shops along Girard Avenue in the Village shopping area; at the Jewel Salon, where Mitt got a $25 haircut in near anonymity; in local restaurants; and at Vons, where real estate agent Sue Nystrom Walsh bumped into Mitt a couple of times.

"He was very nice," she said. "It wasn't any big deal."

Though the Romneys are associated with several states ? Michigan, where they grew up; Massachusetts, where he was governor; New Hampshire, where they own a magnificent lakeside retreat; and Utah, where he led the 2002 Winter Olympics ? the family has multigenerational, if less well known, connections to California.

The presumed Republican presidential nominee spent his freshman year at Stanford, where in 1966 he picketed against a sit-in by demonstrators who opposed the draft.

His mother, the former Lenore LaFount, appeared as a bit player in several Hollywood films and nearly signed an MGM contract that could have paid $50,000 before she was wooed into domesticity by future Michigan Gov. George Romney, whom she met in high school.

In her brief Hollywood career, she was a stand-in for Lily Damita in 1931's "Fifty Million Frenchmen" and played a "chic French girl" in a Greta Garbo film and an "ingenue" in another 1931 film, "A Tailor Made Man," George Romney biographer T. George Harris wrote.

Stung at the thought of losing her, the elder Romney asked his employer, Alcoa, to transfer him to Los Angeles, where he also took night classes at USC, according to Harris, and picked her up at the studio each night.

She didn't like the seedy side of Hollywood and didn't want to have to pose for the cheesecake shots the studio required. But mostly, she fretted for George's male ego. "He'd come out there and didn't want to be known as my date," she told Harris. "In an acting career, I would have been upstaging him, and he couldn't stand that."

One of Mitt's older sisters, Jane Romney, 74, who lives in Beverly Hills and has earned modest success as an actress, said her mother was "unprepared for Hollywood. She was young and raised in a very moral family, and Hollywood was pretty dicey in those days."

In a brief interview, she recalled seeing her mother's screen test when she was a teenager. "She was so very kind of dreamy and wonderful," Jane said.

According to family lore, Jane said, George Romney "followed her out from the East Coast on his white horse and talked her into not signing the contract." She added: "He tried to save me from Hollywood, too, but he wasn't successful." (Jane Romney, who donated $250 to Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer of California in 1997, has supported her Republican brother's presidential campaign, giving $2,500 in 2011 and $2,100 in 2008.)

George Romney told The Times in 1964 when he was governor of Michigan that he felt at home in Los Angeles because he attended kindergarten there and "had started housekeeping with his wife in Santa Monica." Harris, the biographer, wrote that the Romneys rented a house in downtown Los Angeles, at 21st and Main streets.

The family's more contemporary California connections include a stint by Mitt Romney's eldest son, Tagg, as chief marketing officer for the Dodgers. He left after a season to work on his father's first presidential campaign in 2007.

Two other sons, Matt and Craig, live 20 minutes inland from La Jolla near Rancho Bernardo, where their million-dollar-plus homes are nestled on private streets with heavy wooden gates that bar outsiders. Matt is an executive with Excel Trust, a publicly traded real estate investment trust in San Diego that focuses on retail centers, according to its website. Craig once worked as music producer for a New York ad agency but is now in real estate.

The Romney campaign did not allow any of the Romneys or their associates to speak to The Times about any aspect of the family's life in California. A Romney spokeswoman had asked for a list of questions, and then sent back a statement: "Gov. and Mrs. Romney enjoy the time they are able to spend in California and enjoy spending time with family and friends there. When they are in California, Mrs. Romney takes the opportunity to ride horses as much as possible."

(AP) ? Activists say that a bomb has struck a security vehicle in the Syrian capital of Damascus, causing casualties.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and the Local Coordination Committees say Sunday's blast occurred in the upscale neighborhood of Mazzeh.

The LCC said the blast occurred near a military airport in the neighborhood. The Observatory said the explosion caused casualties but did not give a breakdown.

A video posted online by activists showed thick black smoke billowing from what it said was Mazzeh.

Damascus is tightly controlled by regime forces but has been hit by a wave of blasts over recent months that claimed the lives of scores of people. Most of the blasts have targeted Syrian security agencies.

The New York Times?s Arthur Sulzberger Jr. And The Demise Of Janet Robinson

New York Magazine:

As the paper's stock price has declined in recent years, there has been increasing unease among the Ochs-Sulzberger clan, who control the paper through a special class of shares. Three years ago, facing huge debt problems, the company suspended the lucrative stock dividend that once flowed quarterly to the family's 40-plus members, intensifying the need to solve the intractable advertising problems of the newspaper in the digital age and figure out a way to turn the family's cash spigot back on. Janet Robinson, the company's advertising brains, found herself caught between her increasingly remote boss and a frustrated family ?worried over the future of its 116-year-old fortune.

iOS 5.1.1 Untethered Jailbreak ?Absinthe 2.0?: How to Unlock iPhone 4S, iPad 3, iPod Touch and More [VIDEO]

The eagerly anticipated untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.1.1 - Absinthe 2.0 - was released on Friday at the high-profile Hack In The Box (HITB) security conference in Amsterdam. The latest untethered jailbreak supports the whole range of iOS devices, except for the third generation Apple TV.

The complete list of compatible devices for Absinthe 2.0 includes the following: iPhone?3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4 CDMA, iPhone 4S, iPad?1, iPad 2 Wi-Fi, iPad 2 GSM, iPad 2 CDMA, iPad 3 Wi-Fi, iPad 3 CDMA, iPad 3 Global, iPod?3G, iPod 4G and Apple TV 2.

We should recall GreenPois0n introduced the first installment of Absinthe - an untethered jailbreak tool for iOS 5.0.1 - earlier this year. Similar to its previous edition, the new Absinthe tool has been described as a very simple GUI tool with necessary user guidance throughout the jailbreak process.

After the release of Absinthe 2.0 on Friday, the Chronic Dev Team also pushed out an updated version of the tool - Absinthe 2.0.1 - to fix "a couple of little bugs." According to @pimskeks, Absinthe 2.0.1 is for "fixing a hang that could occur in certain situations". Users are advised to download the latest version of Absinthe - v2.0.1 - to fix the bugs before jailbreaking devices running iOS 5.1.1. Despite the new update and the Absinthe tool being a very simple and stable jailbreak, people have been reporting some errors with system hangs and lockdowns.

How to fix Absinthe Lockdown Error

Follow us

The main errors affecting users seem to be: "Error detecting device (lockdown error -5)" and "Could not connect to lockdown".

As iDownloadblog notes, @pod2g and @pimskeks later confirmed the problem was a random coincidence that created a timeout. Nevertheless, the fix seems fairly easy. All you have to do is go to "Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Content and Settings" and then make sure you download Absinthe 2.0.1 and run it again.

Before going ahead with the jailbreak, users must take note of the following key points:

  • ?Make sure you have a complete backup of your device using iTunesor iCloud
  • ?If you are using an unlocked iPhone, you are recommended not to update to stock iOS 5.1.1 firmware and avoid using Absinthe for the moment
  • ?If a passcode is set on your device, you must disable it before starting the jailbreak process

How To Use Absinthe 2.0 On iPhone 4S, iPad 3, iPod Touch and More

Step 1:?Download Absinthe 2.0.1

Absinthe v2.0.1 MacOSX (10.5, 10.6, 10.7)

Absinthe v2.0.1 Windows (XP/Vista/Win7)

Absinthe v2.0.1 Linux (x86/x86_64)

Step 2:?After the download is complete, locate the compressed file, extract all of the contents and place them on your desktop for easy and quick access

Epson WorkForce Pro WP-4533

Nearly identical in most ways to the Epson WorkForce Pro WP-4590 ($499.99 list, 4 stars) that I recently reviewed, the Epson WorkForce Pro WP-4533 ($399.99 list) adds Wi-Fi support that the WP-4590 lacks, but leaves out support for the PCL and PostScript printer languages that some offices require. Beyond that, it shares the same fast speed and good paper handling that makes both printers comparable to similarly priced lasers, and it offers the same low cost per page that makes them particularly attractive choices for micro and small offices and workgroups. The WP-4533 in particular is attractive enough to make it Editors' Choice.

Despite the $100 lower price for the WP-4533, it's best thought of as sharing the current top of the line spot for WorkForce Pro models. In essence, the WP-4590 is top of the line for offices that need PCL or PostScript in their printers, while the WP-4533 is top of the line for those that don't. Both printers, for example, offer identical MFP features. Both print, scan, and fax, including over a network; they both work as standalone copiers and fax machines; and both can scan to, but not print from, a USB key.

As with the WP-4590 also, the WP-4533 lets you print through the cloud. Connect to the Internet by way of a network, using either an Ethernet or WiFi connection in this case, and you can take advantage of Epson Connect Email Print, which assigns an email address to the printer, then lets you print a document by sending it as an email attachment.

Similarly, you can also print with Google Cloud Print and even print with Apple AirPrint if you have a WiFi access point on your network. (You can't connect directly to the printer with AirPrint). You won't find any mention of these two options in the material that comes with the printer, however. To find out how to use either choice, you have to go to Epson's Web site.

Paper Handling and Setup
The WP-4533's paper handling is better than you'll get with most similarly priced color laser MFPs. The 330 sheet paper capacity, divided into a 250-sheet drawer and 80-sheet multi-purpose tray, should be more than enough for most small offices, and the built-in duplexer (for printing on both sides of the page) is a welcome convenience. If you need more capacity, you can even add a second 250-sheet drawer ($99.99 list) for a total of 580 sheets.

For scanning, the WP-4533 offers a 30-page automatic document feeder (ADF) to supplement the letter-size flatbed. The ADF can scan legal-size pages as well as multipage documents, which is typical, but it also goes beyond that, adding the ability to scan in duplex by turning the page over when it scans. The duplexing options lets you copy both single- and double-sided originals to your choice of single- or double-sided copies.

Setup is absolutely standard fare. For my tests, I connected the WP-4533 by its Ethernet port and installed the driver and software on a Windows Vista system. The only potential issue is the size, since the paper handing capabilities require a relative large printer for an inkjet, at 15.1 by 18.1 by 16.5 inches (HWD).

Although that makes the printer a little large to comfortably share a desk with, and arguably a little large for most home offices, it's small enough so it should be an easy fit for a micro or small office. Also worth mention is that it weighs only 30.4 pounds, which makes it much lighter and easier to move around than comparable lasers.

Epson WorkForce Pro WP-4533

Speed and Output Quality
On our business applications I timed the printer (using QualityLogic's hardware and software), at an effective 6.0 pages per minute (ppm). Not surprisingly, that makes it essentially tied with the WP-4590, at 5.7 ppm using the Epson driver. (At these speeds, a 0.3 ppm isn't statistically significant.) It's also essentially tied with the Editors' Choice HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One ($299.99 direct, 4.5 stars) and faster than the comparably priced color laser Editors' choice Dell 1355cnw Multifunction Color Printer ($419.99 direct, 4 stars), which managed only 4.5 ppm.

As with the WP-4590, output quality is the only area where the WP-4533 behaves more like a typical inkjet than like a laser. Text quality is at the low end of the tight range where the vast majority of inkjets fall, which makes it good enough for most business purposes. Unless you have an unusual need for small fonts, you shouldn't have any complaints about it.

Graphics is absolutely par for an inkjet, which also makes it makes it good enough for any business needs, including PowerPoint handouts, for example. Depending on how critical an eye you have, you may also consider it good enough for output going to an important client when you need to convey a sense of professionalism.

Photo quality is at the upper end of the small range where the vast majority of inkjet MFPs fall, making it better than what you'd get with some drugstore prints and a lot better than you'll get from a color laser. For those businesses, like real estate offices, that need to print photos, that can be a welcome plus.

One other strong argument for the WP-4533 is its low cost per page. Based on ink cost and claimed yields for the cartridges, the running cost comes out to 1.6 cents for a monochrome page and 6.8 cents for a color page. That makes the WP-4533, along with WP-4590, one of the least expensive printers in this price range to print with. And that includes lasers as well as inkjets.

As I said about the WP-4590, the WP-4533 is one of the more impressive inkjets we've tested. Its speed, paper handling, and MFP features are all a match for comparably priced?and even more expensive?laser MFPs, and it offers everything a small office needs, including some notable extras like cloud printing. Clearly, if you must have PostScript or PCL, the WP-4590 will be your preferred choice. For the larger number of small offices that don't, however, the WP-4533 offers all the same capabilities plus WiFi at a lower price.

More generally, if you must have laser-quality text, you should also look at the Dell 1355cnw; and if you can benefit from a legal-size flatbed, you should look at the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus. However, the low cost per page for the Epson WorkForce Pro WP-4533 is enough to make it Editors' Choice also, along with both of those printers. And the more you print, the more you'll appreciate the savings.

BlueStacks beta-1 [Android App Review]

Angry Birds Space via BlueStacks beta-1

BlueStacks has been around for a while. We first saw it in an early alpha, that while usable, wasn't ready for prime time. After lots of toiling and hard work (I assume), we finally saw BlueStacks enter beta, and boy, was this ever a different program.

So what exactly does BlueStacks let you do? It lets you run Android applications right on your PC, just as though you were using an Android phone or tablet. It manages to pull this off using some sort of black voodoo neckbeard magic? "Layercake" technology the guys have developed, and man oh man, do I like it.

Getting BlueStacks going is simply a breeze. Once you've got it all installed, you simply open it up and there's a list of preinstalled apps. You have access to a couple of different app stores to download other apps you might want, and to top it all off, you can install apk's directly into BlueStacks, right off of your computer's hard drive.

(There's also an app syncing tool that lets you sync apps from your phone to your computer's client, which skirts the whole apk issue, but just know that it's there if you need it.)

When you've finally got an app loaded up in BlueStacks, there's always a bit of experimenting to see what button or mouse click controls what. For something like Angry Birds Space, it's all pretty straightforward; use your mouse like you'd use your finger.

For something more complex (and visually demanding) like Shadowgun, you've just got to mess around. For the most part, mouse clicks transfer pretty well, and more often than not, arrow keys will move your character. The few times I ran Shadowgun, it was either kind of stuttery or buttery smooth, so your mileage can definitely vary.

Overall, BlueStacks is pretty darn cool, especially if you've ever wanted to get the Android experience on your computer. Its uses might seem a bit novel right now, but as prices for games in the mobile space continue to come in lower than their desktop counterparts, BlueStacks looks like it could offer some market disruption.

You can download the BlueStacks Windows component from the BlueStacks website at no cost. We've got video after the break.

(AP) ? Larry Bird called the Indiana Pacers soft. His team agreed. LeBron James thought otherwise.

Bird told The Indianapolis Star early Wednesday that he "can't believe my team went soft" after the Pacers were beaten 115-83 in Game 5 of an Eastern Conference semifinal series Tuesday night against the Miami Heat.

Miami leads the series 3-2, with Game 6 on Thursday in Indianapolis.

Tuesday's game in Miami was marred by three flagrant fouls ? one committed by Indiana's Tyler Hansbrough against Dwyane Wade, another by Miami's Udonis Haslem against Hansbrough moments after Wade was bloodied. The last was a particularly hard play by Heat reserve center Dexter Pittman against the Pacers' Lance Stephenson in the final seconds.

"I agree with his assessment. We did play soft," Indiana's Danny Granger said Wednesday. "We got smacked around. We got beat up, we got bullied, and we really didn't respond well.

"I've been with Larry since I've been in Indiana for seven years," Granger added. "He's not been one to hold his tongue, and 99 percent of the time what he's saying is right. I think he just called out what everyone else saw. We played a soft game. We didn't play with the playoff intensity that we needed to win."

Granger was in flip-flops when Wednesday's practice ended, saying the left ankle he sprained in Game 5 was still painful. Stephenson, who had X-rays taken to rule out any fractures to his collarbone or shoulder areas, did not practice.

"In my mind, I'm going to play," Granger said. "Elimination game, I have to play."

Vogel sounded concerned, but optimistic.

"Very much hoping he'll be available tomorrow," Vogel said. "He's a gamer. I'm thinking he'll play. But his ankle's pretty bad, so we'll see."

The Heat had a different reaction to Bird's comments. With the Pacers facing a win-or-else game Thursday, James thought Bird ? recently announced as the league's executive of the year ? wanted to provide extra incentive for Indiana.

"He's just trying to amp them up. That's all. That's all it is," James said. "He knows his team isn't soft. But with them, with their backs against the wall at this point, he knows what he's doing. He's not the executive of the year for no reason."

All three of the flagrant fouls called Tuesday were category-1, meaning no players were automatically ejected. The league has a wide range of options available for its review process, including upgrading those fouls to category-2. The NBA could also issue fines and suspensions.

"I expect they will. That game was nationally televised," Granger said. "A lot of people saw the plays. I think they have to."

The NBA had made no public comment before either team finished practices Wednesday.

"All the chatter and all the stuff, it'll still end up being decided between the lines," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "And it'll be decided by the rules of the game."

Wade sounded somewhat amused that Granger ? who's been whistled for three technicals in the series ? was one of the Pacers suggesting Haslem and Pittman should be suspended. Wade and Granger have had words during the series.

"We're not in here crying about the fouls," Wade said. "They fouled us. ... We're moving on to Game 6. We're not going to worry about what happened in Game 5. For us, it's about moving forward."

There were a number of other hard fouls in Game 5 that were not considered flagrant but continued the trend of what's become a physical series. Indiana forward David West ? who left Tuesday's game with what the team called a sprained knee, though he insisted Wednesday he was not hurt ? took exception to a play where he was knocked backward, saying a Heat player fell into his knee.

Not long afterward, he fouled James, who said he saw it coming.

"He was the one on the floor and I was the one still standing," James said. "So I started laughing at that. But he tried to get me."

Indiana coach Frank Vogel called Miami floppers before the series started, and it's been gritty throughout. The teams combined to shoot 66 free throws in Game 1, and there have been a combined nine technicals and flagrants called in the four games since. Other dustups included Stephenson making a choke sign that television cameras caught during Game 3, and Juwan Howard confronting him about his antics before Game 4.

"It's been a physical series, started by them," Wade said.

The Pacers practiced in Miami before flying home Wednesday, a somewhat uncommon move but one that Vogel wanted in an effort to keep his team on a relatively normal sleep schedule.

CAIRO (AP) ? More than 15 months after autocratic leader Hosni Mubarak's ouster, Egyptians streamed to polling stations Wednesday to freely choose a president for the first time in generations. Waiting hours in line, some debated to the last minute over their vote in a historic election pitting old regime figures against ascending Islamists.

A sense of amazement at having a choice in the Arab world's first truly competitive presidential election pervaded the crowds in line. So did the fervent expectation over where a new leader will take a country that has been in turmoil ever since its ruler for nearly 30 years was toppled by mass protests.

Some backed Mubarak-era veterans, believing they can bring stability after months of rising crime, a crumbling economy and bloody riots. Others were horrified by the thought, believing the "feloul" ? or "remnants" of the regime ? will keep Egypt locked in dictatorship and thwart democracy.

Islamists, particularly the Muslim Brotherhood, saw their chance to lead a country where they were repressed for decades and to implement their version of Islamic law. Their critics recoiled, fearing theocracy.

"You can't tell me, 'Vote for this or else you're a sinner!'" Wael Ramadan argued with another man in line at a polling station in the impoverished Cairo neighborhood of Basateen. "We never said that," protested the man. "Yes, you did," Ramadan shot back.

"The revolution changed a lot. Good things and bad things," Ramadan, a 40-year-old employee at a mobile phone company, said afterward. "The good thing is all this freedom. We are here and putting up with the trouble of waiting in line for electing a president. My vote matters. It is now a right ... Now we want a president that has a vision."

A field of 13 candidates is running in the voting Wednesday and Thursday. The two-day first run is not expected to produce an outright winner, so a runoff between the two top vote-getters will be held June 16-17. The winner will be announced June 21. Around 50 million people are eligible to vote.

An Islamist victory will likely mean a greater emphasis on religion in government. The Muslim Brotherhood, which already dominates parliament, says it won't mimic Saudi Arabia and force women to wear veils or implement harsh punishments like amputations. But it says it does want to implement a more moderate version of Islamic law, which liberals fear will mean limitations on many rights.

Many of the candidates have called for amendments in Egypt's 1979 peace treaty with Israel, which remains deeply unpopular. None is likely to dump it, but a victory by any of the Islamist or leftist candidates in the race could mean strained ties with Israel and a stronger stance in support of the Palestinians in the peace process. The candidates from the Mubarak's regime ? and, ironically, the Brotherhood, which has already held multiple talks with U.S. officials ? are most likely to maintain the alliance with the United States.

The real election battle is between four front-runners.

The main Islamist contenders are Mohammed Morsi of the powerful Brotherhood and Abdel-Moneim Abolfotoh, a moderate Islamist whose inclusive platform has won him the support of some liberals, leftists and minority Christians.

The two secular front-runners are both veterans of Mubarak's regime ? former prime minister Ahmed Shafiq and former foreign minister Amr Moussa.

A major worry is whether either side will accept ultimate victory by the other. Many Islamists have warned of a new wave of protests if Shafiq wins, saying his victory could only come from fraud.

So far, there were only a few reports of overt violations of election rules Wednesday, mainly concerning candidates' backers campaigning near polling stations. Three international monitoring organizations, including the U.S.'s Carter Center, were observing the vote. Former President Jimmy Carter, the center's head, visited a polling station in the ancient Cairo district of Sayeda Ayesha.

"You know, there is no such thing as a perfect election," U.S. Congressman David Dreier of California said at a polling center. "But I'm convinced that there is a great degree of sincerity on the part of those that are putting this together."

The election's winner will face a monumental task. The economy has been sliding as the key tourism industry dried up ? though it starting to inch back up. Crime has increased. Labor strikes have proliferated.

"May God help the new president," said Zaki Mohammed, a teacher in his 40s as he waited to vote in a district close to the Giza Pyramids. "There will be 82 million pairs of eyes watching him."

And the political turmoil is far from over. The military, which took power after Mubarak's fall on Feb. 11, 2011, has promised to hand authority to the election winner by the end of June. But many fear it will try to maintain a considerable amount of political say. The fundamentals of Mubarak's police state remain in place, including the powerful security forces. The generals have said they have no preferred candidate, but they are widely thought to be favoring Shafiq, a former air force commander.

"We will have an elected president but the military is still here and the old regime is not dismantled," said Ahmed Maher, a prominent activist from the group April 6, a key architect of last year's 18-day uprising against Mubarak.

"But the pressure will continue. We won't sleep. People have finally woken up. Whoever the next president is, we won't leave him alone," he said outside a Cairo polling center.

Moreover, the country must still write a new constitution. That was supposed to be done already, but was delayed after Islamists tried to dominate the constitution-writing panel, prompting a backlash that scuttled the process for the moment.

The Muslim Brotherhood is hoping a Morsi victory in the presidency will cap their political rise, after parliament elections last year gave them nearly half the legislature's seats.

In the Mediterranean city of Alexandria, microbuses run by the Brotherhood ferried women supporters to the polls in the poor neighborhood of Abu Suleiman, one of the group's strongholds. The women, in conservative headscarves or covered head to toe in black robes and veils that hid their faces, filed into the station.

"I want to give the Brotherhood a chance to rule," said Aida Ibrahim, a veteran Brotherhood member who was helping voters find their station. "If it doesn't work, they will be held accountable," she said.

Some Brotherhood supporters cited the group's years of providing charity to the poor ? including reduced-price meat, and free medical care. "Whoever fills the tummy gets the vote," said Naima Badawi, a housewife sitting on her doorstep watching voters in Abu Sir, one of the many farming villages near the Pyramids being sucked into Cairo's urban sprawl.

But some who backed the Brotherhood in the parliament election late last year have since been turned off.

"They failed," said Mohammed Ali, in the neighboring Talbiya district. He's gone clear the other direction for this vote: "I am feloul" ? pro-Mubarak "remnant," he said. "I don't care. I want a man who is a politician and statesman."

The secular young democracy activists who launched the anti-Mubarak uprising have been at a loss, with no solid candidate reflecting their views.

In Cairo, 27-year-old Ali Ragab said he was voting for a leftist candidate, Hamdeen Sabahi ? because the poor "should get a voice," but he admitted Sabahi didn't stand much of a chance.

He said his father and all his father's friends were backing Shafiq "because they think he's a military man who will bring back security. I'm afraid Shafiq would mean another Mubarak for 30 more years."

For most of his rule, Mubarak ? like his predecessors for the past 60 years ? ran unopposed in yes-or-no referendums. Rampant fraud guaranteed ruling party victories in parliamentary elections. Even when Mubarak let challengers oppose him in 2005 elections, he ended up not only trouncing his liberal rival but jailing him.

The election comes less than two weeks before a court is due to issue its verdict on Mubarak, 84, who has been on trial on charges of complicity in the killing of some 900 protesters during the uprising. He also faces corruption charges, along with his two sons, one-time heir apparent Gamal and wealthy businessman Alaa.

The feeling of being able to make a choice was overwhelming for some voters.

"I might die in a matter of months, so I came for my children, so they can live," a tearful Medhat Ibrahim, 58, who suffers from cancer, said as he waited to vote in a poor district south of Cairo. "We want to live better, like human beings."
