West Nashville restaurant joins fight against brain cancer | Cancer Kick

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

A west Nashville restaurant is joining in the fight against brain cancer.

Daniel Maggipinto, who is the owner of Caffe Nonna located on Murphy Road, told Nashville?s News 2 he lost his daughter to an aggressive form of brain cancer in 2002.

?My daughter Zoe Marie, she was born in 2000. [In]? December Of 2000 and in July of 2001, she was diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer called AT-RT, a typical theratoid raptoid tumor,? he explained. ?It was a super aggressive brain tumor, especially for kids.?

Zoe was nearly three-years-old when she lost her battle with the disease. ?

Maggipinto said his daughter endured countless chemotherapy sessions and radiation with little success.

In an effort to raise funds in the fight against brain cancer, Maggipinto said the restaurant sells a variety of pasta sauces and Chianti thumbprint cookies with all profits going to brain tumor research.

All of the products are made locally and are also sold at some area grocery stores, as well as online.

For more information on Caffe Nonna, visit their Web site.

Syrian lashes out at Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey, vows to beat rebels in Aleppo

BEIRUT - The Syrian regime accused regional powerhouses Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey of trying to destroy the country and vowed Sunday that it would defeat rebels who have captured large swathes of the commercial hub Aleppo.

Military forces in Aleppo fired tank and artillery shells at neighbourhoods as rebels tried to repel the government air and ground assault. According to activists, rebels who launched an operation to take over Syria's largest city a week ago are estimated to control between a third and a half of Aleppo's neighbourhoods.

Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem, on a visit to Iran, levelled some rare public criticism of Sunni powers in the Middle East, saying Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey are supporting a plot hatched by Israel to destroy Syria. The three countries have all been backing rebels trying to overthrow authoritarian President Bashar Assad.

"Israel is the mastermind of all in this crisis," Moallem told a joint news conference in Tehran with his Iranian counterpart Ali Akbar Salehi . "They (Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey) are fighting in the same front."

The battle for Aleppo, once a bastion of support for Assad's regime, is critical for both the regime and the opposition. Its fall would be a major blow to Assad, giving the opposition a major strategic victory with a new stronghold in the north.

"They mobilized all their armed terrorists and tried to capture Damascus in less than a week," Moallem said. "They were defeated. Today, they've gone to Aleppo and definitely they will be defeated in Aleppo," he added. The rebels mounted a challenge to the regime in Damascus before the assault on Aleppo, but after a week of intense clashes, they were defeated.

Iran, Syria's only remaining ally in the Middle East, has provided Assad's government with military and political backing for years, and has kept up its strong support for the regime since the uprising began in March 2011.

Sunday's bombardment was part of a government counter-offensive to retake control of districts that had fallen into rebel hands last week at the beginning of their bid to capture Aleppo.

Activists said the shelling was most intense in the southwestern neighbourhoods of Salaheddine, Bustan al-Qasr and parts of Saif al-Dawla, some of the first areas seized by the rebels when they started the push last week after being routed in a similar attack against the capital Damascus.

"Life in Aleppo has become unbearable. I'm in my car and I'm leaving right now," said a Syrian opposition writer who was fleeing the city Sunday. "There's shelling night and day, every day," he said, speaking on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals.

The writer and other activists from Aleppo said economic conditions had become dire in the city.

"Bread, gasoline and gas are being sold on the black market at very high prices," he said. "Many things are in shortage."

State-run news agency SANA said security agents were hunting down armed groups in several areas of Aleppo including Salaheddine, inflicting heavy losses upon the "terrorists" ? the term authorities use to describe the rebels.

SANA quoted an Aleppo official as saying troops would continue until the city is "purged" of armed groups and peace and tranquility is restored.

Syrian Interior Minister Mohammad al-Shaar vowed late Saturday that the Syrian army would root out terrorism and restore order to Syria. Al-Shaar was making his first televised appearance since he was wounded in the July 18 bomb attack in Damascus that killed four other top security leaders in Assad's inner circle.

Al-Shaar's arm was bandaged, but he said he was back at his job with "greater determination."

Mohammad Saeed, an Aleppo-based activist, said Sunday's shelling was some of the heaviest seen yet.

"But the rebels are still holding up well," he said. "No ground troops have been able to enter. They are shelling from outside." He said rebels were fighting back against the attackers.

He said around 200 fighters entered the city Sunday to join about 1,000 fighters who had poured into the city in the past few days to take on the Syrian army, which had been massing forces around the city ahead of the bombardment.

He also said rebels have received "a new batch of weapons and ammunition," but declined to say from where.

An amateur video posted online by activists showed flames and black smoke billowing from a building in the Bustan al-Qasr district of Aleppo.

Another video showed rebels celebrating the seizure of a tank in the town of al-Bab in Aleppo countryside. Dozens of rebels, some waving Kalashnikov rifles, sat atop the tank as it drove through al-Bab, while residents shouted "Allahu Akbar" and motorists honked their horns in celebration.

The Britain-based activist group Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also reported heavy fighting and explosions in Aleppo. It reported intense clashes in the Bab al-Hadeed, al-Zahraa and al-Arqoub neighbourhoods.

The international community has raised an outcry about a possible massacre in this city of 3 million but acknowledged there was little they could do to stop the bloodshed. The foreign minister of Russia, a powerful ally of Syria, said over the weekend it was "simply unrealistic" for Damascus to cede control of Aleppo.

Since the rebel assault on Aleppo began a week ago, about 162 people have been killed, mostly civilians, according to the Observatory. Some 19,000 people have been killed since the uprising began, the group says.

The violence has sent refugees flooding into neighbouring countries including Jordan, Turkey, Iraq and Lebanon.

Jordan said it had opened its first tent camp for Syrians, saying a surge of refugees forced it to do so.

Authorities had been reluctant to set up the camps, possibly to avoid angering Assad's regime by concentrating images of civilians fleeing his military onslaught.

But with 142,000 Syrians refugees and their numbers growing daily by up to 2,000, Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh said Sunday that Jordan had no other choice. He spoke at the camp's opening ceremony in the hamlet of Zataari, about 11 kilometres (7 miles) from the northern border with Syria.

Colorado theater gunman charged with 24 counts of murder

[Updated at 3:30 p.m. ET]

Prosecutors on Monday charged James Holmes with two dozen counts of first-degree murder and more than 100 other violent offenses related to the recent deadly rampage at a Colorado movie theater.

Holmes, who appeared in court with the same cartoonish orange-red hair he had at the time of the shooting, said only one word during Monday's hearing.

"Yes," he answered when asked by the judge if he waived his right to a preliminary hearing within 35 days.

Police say Holmes, 24, blasted his way through a packed movie house during a premiere showing of Batman "The Dark Knight Rises" in Aurora.

Twelve victims died in the attack, 58 others were wounded. The melee is among the worst mass shootings in modern-day American history. Prosecutors filed a total of 142 criminal charges against him, including 116 counts of attempted murder. The 24 murder counts reflect dual charges (premeditated and without remorse) by the prosecutors.

In the lengthy list of charges, the Arapahoe County District Attorney's Office accuses Holmes of, "evidencing an attitude of universal malice manifesting extreme indifference to the value of human life."

During Monday's hearing, Judge William Sylvester carefully explained to Holmes that the charges carry a minimum sentence of life in prison and a maximum of death. The district attorney near Denver has not announced if she will seek the death penalty against the alleged gunman.

Half of the 110-seat courtroom was filled with victims or their families. One survivor entered the courtroom in a wheelchair with a bandage on her left leg. Blood from a wound could be seen through the bandage. Some stared intently at Holmes, who sat at the defense table to the right of his two attorneys, throughout the 50-minute hearing. Others focused on Judge Sylvester and attorneys as they discussed procedural issues and hearing dates.

Ashley Moser lost her 6-year-old daughter in the attack and was also paralyzed in the shooting. Her aunt, MaryEllen Hensen, was in court on Monday and said the suspect looked more alert in today's hearing. In his first court appearance, Holmes was described by many as being dazed and groggy.

"When we'd seen him before, he looked kind of spaced out or out of touch," Hensen said. "He looked very alert today and very lucid."

Still, she said, "he had an expression and persona of evilness to him."

Some in the court's gallery wore sunglasses. One woman cried openly. Three people, including a woman with a bandaged arm, wore Batman T-shirts.

"It saddens our family that there is a man that has so much hate and evil in his heart," the family of Gordon Cowden said in a statement after Monday's hearing. "We feel confident that our judicial system, as will God and the public, see to it that this evil man receives the punishment he deserves and our hope and prayers are that one day, he will face God with remorse and tremendous sorrow for his actions."

Cowden, 51, had taken his two teenagers to see the midnight premiere. His children escaped the shooting spree without injury.

"Gordon was a man, working with their mom, to raise four children, to build a solid foundation for each; teaching them to love life, love themselves, love others and to love God," his family said. "And though this evil man has caused our family so much hurt and pain he cannot, nor can anyone ever take away or ever permanently damage this foundation of love for each other, for others, for life and for God."

Hensen, who lost a great niece, said she fears sending Holmes to death row will prolong the time it takes for victims to heal.

"As far as the death penalty goes, I am a Christian and I do believe he should just be probably locked away and live with what he did every day of his life," she said.

[COMPLETE COVERAGE: Colorado theater shooting]

Holmes was clad in tactical gear and possessed four guns and a stockpile of ammo when he surrendered to officers behind the cinema shortly after the July 20 shooting spree. He did not resist arrest, but investigators have since described the former neuroscience doctoral student as uncooperative.

Police say Holmes legally purchased the guns in May and June but allegedly began stockpiling ammo and other gear four months ago.

"This is not a whodunit. ... The only possible defense is insanity," Craig Silverman, a former chief deputy district attorney in Denver, told the Associated Press.

At Monday's hearing, attorneys also discussed a package the former grad student allegedly sent to his psychiatrist at the University of Colorado Denver.

Authorities seized the package July 23, three days after the shooting, after finding it in the mail room of the medical campus where Holmes studied. Several media outlets reported that it contained a notebook with descriptions of an attack, but Arapahoe County District Attorney Carol Chambers said in court papers that the parcel hadn't been opened by the time the "inaccurate" news reports appeared.

On Friday, court papers revealed that Holmes was seeing a psychiatrist at the university. But they did not say how long he was seeing Dr. Lynne Fenton and if it was for a mental illness or another problem.

The University of Colorado's website identified Fenton as the medical director of the school's Student Mental Health Services. An online resume listed schizophrenia as one of her research interests and stated that she sees 10 to 15 graduate students a week for medication and psychotherapy, as well as 5 to 10 patients in her general practice as a psychiatrist, the Associated Press reported.

Under Colorado law, defendants are not legally liable for their acts if their minds are so "diseased" that they cannot distinguish between right and wrong. However, the law warns that "care should be taken not to confuse such mental disease or defect with moral obliquity, mental depravity, or passion growing out of anger, revenge, hatred, or other motives, and kindred evil conditions."

[RELATED: Should the movie theater reopen?]

Experts say there are two levels of insanity defenses. Holmes' public defenders could argue he is not mentally competent to stand trial, like Jared Loughner, who killed six people when he shot Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in Tucson in 2011. Loughner has pleaded not guilty to charges in the shooting. He has been diagnosed with schizophrenia and is undergoing treatment at a Missouri prison facility in a bid to make him mentally fit to stand trial.

If Holmes' attorneys cannot convince the court that he is mentally incompetent, and he is convicted, they can try to stave off a possible death penalty by arguing he is mentally ill.

Sam Kamin, a law professor at the University of Denver, said there is "pronounced" evidence that the attack was premeditated, which would seem to make an insanity defense difficult. "But," he told the Associated Press, "the things that we don't know are what this case is going to hinge on, and that's his mental state."

Pakistan unrelenting in demanding drone strike end

(AP) ? Pakistan's ambassador to the United States says her country will not relent from demanding that the CIA end its drone strikes.

In a debate with White House war adviser Douglas Lute at the Aspen Security Forum, Sherry Rehman said drone attacks have damaged al-Qaida but are now only serving to recruit new militants.

"I am not saying drones have not assisted in the war against terror, but they have diminishing rate of returns," Rehman said by video teleconference from Washington.

With Pakistan's spy chief, Lt. Gen. Zaheerul Islam, expected to hold his first meeting with CIA Director David Petraeus at CIA headquarters in Virginia next week, the ambassador said, "We will seek an end to drone strikes and there will be no compromise on that."

Lute would not comment on the drone program. U.S. officials have said privately that it will continue because Pakistan has proved incapable or unwilling to target militants the U.S. considers dangerous.

A long-sought U.S. apology to Pakistan over a deadly border incident cleared the way to restart counterterrorism talks. In addition to the end to drone strikes, Pakistani officials say they will ask the U.S. to feed intelligence gathered by the pilotless aircraft to Pakistani jets and ground forces so they can target militants.

While neither side expects much progress, officials from both countries see the return to dialogue as a chance to repair a relationship dented by a series of incidents that damaged trust on both sides. U.S. officials remain angry over what they say is Pakistan's support of Taliban groups, including the militant Haqqani network, that the U.S. contends are taking shelter in Pakistan's tribal areas and attack troops in neighboring Afghanistan.

But Rehman dismissed as "outrageous" the claim that Pakistan is harboring al-Qaida or other militants who intend to harm the U.S. She said Pakistan's army was working hard to combat the militants, including reporting 52 times to NATO in recent months when militants were spotted crossing into Afghan territory.

"Pakistan is maxed out on the international border with Afghanistan," she said.

"Sovereignty has privileges but also comes with responsibilities," countered Lute who called for Pakistan to step up its efforts and to cease "hedging its bets" by supporting the Afghan Taliban.

The two did agree, however, that Pakistan could help broker an eventual peace deal with the Taliban.

When asked why the Taliban would surrender ahead of the 2014 drawdown of U.S. troops, Lute said a recent security agreement with Afghanistan ensures a long-term U.S. commitment to Afghan security.

"The agreement we've made with Afghanistan signals to Taliban that they can't wait us out," Lute said. "If they want another decade of this, to get hammered every day and every night," U.S. and Afghan forces can provide.

If the Taliban are willing to disarm and respect the laws of the Afghan government, "the door will remain open to negotiation," Lute said.

A major grievance for Pakistan remains last year's U.S. Navy SEAL raid that killed Osama bin Laden on Pakistani soil. The operation was conducted without Pakistan's permission.

Rehman defended Pakistan's arrest of Dr. Shakil Afridi, who has been sentenced to more than three decades in prison for aiding the CIA in tracking down bin Laden. Afridi conducted a vaccine program in the military town where the terrorist mastermind turned out to be hiding.

U.S. lawmakers have threatened to halt millions of dollars in aid to Pakistan unless Afridi is released, in recognition of his contribution. Afridi is appealing his sentence.

"He had no clue he was looking for Osama bin Laden," Rehman countered. "He was contracting with a foreign intelligence agency."

She added that Afridi's actions put thousands of children at risk because some vaccine programs had to be ended after Pakistani aid workers were targeted by the Taliban.

Movie Review: 'Searching for Sugar Man' | Movies & TV | Arts ...

Rodriguez in the documentary ?Searching for Sugar Man,? a film about the ?70s rock musician Rodriguez. (Courtesy of Sony Pictures Classics)

Imagine a Latino-American musician who wrote lyrics that many in the music business claimed were more powerful than those of the great Bob Dylan himself. He was supposed to have been huge. He would have definitely eclipsed Bob, but didn?t. Why? Who was this man?

Sixto Rodriguez, the subject of ?Searching for Sugar Man,? was an unsung American hero, who, while living in poverty and obscurity in Detroit, almost single-handedly caused the downfall of South African apartheid.

Never heard of him? Nobody had. Until now. In this labor-of-love documentary, his unsung story is finally, brilliantly, and heartwarmingly sung.

The year is 1968. A mythic musician roams the mean streets of Detroit. Switching between talking-head-type interviews and panning shots of desolate, random cityscapes of Detroit, accompanied by the music of Rodriguez, the film starts off heading toward what looks like a grim, depressing portrait of a deceased local musician.

We come to learn that he was considered an icon, a rebel, and a hero by Afrikaners. He brought the spirit of American civil rights and Vietnam War era anti-establishment protests to South Africa?s fight against apartheid.

His music freed the people, and especially inspired the Afrikaner musicians at the forefront of the anti-apartheid movement to step up, rabble-rouse, and speak out against the inhumanity of the apartheid system. South Africa banned Rodriguez?s records. Fans tattooed his face on their arms.

?Searching for Sugar Man

Director:?Malik Bendjelloul
Cast:?Malik Bendjelloul, Rodriguez
Running Time:?86 minutes

To scout out the story, the detective work utilized the time-honored ploy of ?following the money.? This tracks down one Clarence Avant, a manager, who doesn?t know what happened to his former client.

The trail then goes cold until a tip and a map search turn up the name of Dearborn, Michigan. It also turns up three grown daughters?Eva, Regan, and Sandra Rodriguez?and this is when the film really takes off.

According to strikingly handsome eldest daughter Eva, an intellectual hippie-artist, their father was a charismatic yet entirely humble Mexican-American musician. He was a hard worker who did construction and demolition, but with an entertainer?s flair, wearing tuxedos while carrying refrigerators on his back.

\>");

He?d majored in philosophy. He?d run for city council. He?d raised his kids well. All the while he exuded serenity and tranquility. And he was ?bigger than Elvis? in South Africa. The mystery deepens.

Looking like a dead ringer for lead singer John Kay of the 1970s rock band Steppenwolf, Rodriguez?s voice sounds like a combination of Jose Feliciano, Dylan, and the 1970s Native American band Redbone. His music is distinctly ?70s in its use of the string sections and flutes popular at the time.

One could say much more, but the film harbors a secret about music, and about Sixto Rodriguez. It would be sacrilege to spoil it. One music executive sums up the magic of this film by quoting a Paul Simon lyric from Simon?s South African-influenced album ?Graceland?: ?These are the days of miracles and wonder.?

There will be a rediscovery and resurgence of Rodriguez?s music. See the film, learn the secret, and be inspired. These are indeed the days of miracles and wonder.

Poetry is still alive within me - Laban Erapu - Entertainment |monitor ...

In Summary

You must know him from his poems; ?An Elegy?, ?The Quilt of Giving? or ?I Beg You? from ?Poems from East Africa?, an anthology of poems edited by David Rubadiri and David Cook. Laban Erapu is Professor of Literature, Bishop Stuart University, Mbarara; an independent publishing consultant with East African Educational Publishers; and Managing Director/Chairman Designate with Creative Digital Productions Ltd, a new Film-making company. Beatrice Lamwaka spoke to him about his passion for writing.

How has your journey as a writer been like?
I started reading and writing at the age of seven. I used to compose love letters for the older boys who had realized that I had skills with words. Then, I didn?t attach value to my writing. While at Ntare School, I wrote poems that I cannot find. In 1963, I won the territorial English Essay Writing Competition organized by Brooke Bond and the Associated Tea Growers of East Africa.

The prize included books and an all-expenses paid trip to United Kingdom for me and my teacher in the company of similar parties from Kenya and Tanzania. I was the youngest in the group. For two weeks, we climbed mountains, we toured the United Kingdom and I had a wonderful time. This was the first time; I got something of monetary value for my writing. And it was the best gift for a senior four student who hadn?t travelled outside of Uganda.

I grew up writing poetry under the tutorship of Prof Timothy Wangusa; active writers club associated with David Rubadiri, Ali Mazrui, Henry Barlow, the late Prof David Cook and Margaret Macpherson that is when my skills were sharpened. While a student at Makerere University, I was the editor of Dhana Magazine and chief editor of the Makererean that is when I got interested in printing and publishing. Later, I was desk editor for The People Newspaper where I wrote lead articles.

In 1968, I won a Writing Competition for new writers sponsored by Oxford University Press. In addition to cash and book prizes for me and my school, the award also included the publication of my first novel, Restless Feet.
Soon after, I was awarded a Commonwealth Scholarship by the British Council to study for a Masters degree at Edinburgh University 1969-1971.

One of the great moments in my writing career was working with Ngugi Wa Thiong?o. As a reader of manuscript for Heinemann Educational Publishers, I read The Trial of Dedan Kimathi, Petals of Blood and I Will Marry When I Want which inspired me to write my PhD thesis on his writing.

Where do you get ideas to write your stories?
Stories create themselves and write themselves. The ideas come nearly complete. I see an opportunity to take an adventure. I have a clear picture of the beginning of the journey, clear picture of what it will take me through and where it will culminate the ending. Once I start, the story takes over my life. I am transported into the setting which I see in details. I am the invisible eye which sees the characters, hears them and lives with them as they take me through their stories.
At that point, I don?t know that milestone go as the story unfolds taking twists and turns that I never anticipated, sometimes I am taking me by surprise, sometimes making me nod in agreement. Sometimes, I am unaware of my existence of the story and I become a mere scribe that is transcribing a story that is not my own but my own characters. That goes on until the story is over and I become my own person. I talk about this as a kind of madness that I realise that to be a creative writer necessitate loosing oneself and surrendering entirely to that creative impact.

Where do you find time to write?
Most people say they have stories but they don?t have time to write.
I always find the time to write. I cannot let the opportunity I have go to waste. It is until I have finished writing a piece that I find time to do something else. The piece becomes a priority in my life.

Do you still write poetry?
Poetry is still alive with me; ?I Beg You? has since been re-written and forced me to issue a subsequent poem. Poems are part of my life and I look through them. They are not over 40 years old but rather part of my ongoing existence. Anyone who looks at my poems as old; would he regard Hamlet by Shakespeare as older? Characters in literature are timeless and ageless.

Which writers have influenced your writing?
I read extensively. I read all kinds of novels including thrillers. I don?t try to write like any writer. I write my stories as they come to me. The stories inform my writing level of perfection as other writers have. A writer must always aim for perfection. The writing must be convincing and worth reading. I must be honest with myself as a storyteller and avoid mediocrity.

What advice do you have for young Ugandan writers?
Writers should keep writing. Writing is a craft that need to be developed. Writers shouldn?t be deterred by reviewers and publishers, they should let their creative impulse lead on to more and more experiment in creative writing. Most writers who persist will eventually get published. Writing is one percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration.

What kind of books do you read?
I read any kind of novel that comes my way. I have read a number of series based on the French Revolution, classics, American literature, West Indies and Caribbean literature, European literature among others. I have a deep background in literature. If a book was worth writing then it?s worth reading. Time is the only factor that prevents me from reading; otherwise, I would read all books.

What are you working on?
I am shooting a film script of my friend and my brother?s book, Song of Lawino by Okot p?Bitek. This is polyphony of voices and a representation of Acholi culture. I am looking for funding now.

What should be government?s role in this regard?
The government should create a supportive environment, assist in advertising in its publicity machines within tourism and support it financially in as basic a manner as in the salary of at least 2 of the key administrators (the Festival Director and the Marketing Manager) for they make the festival happen.
The government pours in millions to support the Tourist Board but no money to ZIFF which can actually show the Tsh I.5 billion we bring to the economy.

Are Africans enthusiastic about festivals?
Very much so. ZIFF reaches over 250,000 people. It is in the manner you package the event that will ensure local support. By creating a mzungu event in an African environment you will only ensure the demise of the colourful and creative energies of the local people and organisers.

Weight loss and a vegetarian actually it?s not that big a deal, you should remember well eat more low fat, low sugar food. If you eat too much refined carbohydrates, such as bread, pasta, you can grow fat. Adult day intake by refined carbohydrates if more than 400 grams, there will be a danger to get fat. What will NASA's Mars rover do when it gets there?

If NASA's Mars Curiosity rover lands successfully, it will look for signs of habitability. The rover will also keep an eye on the weather.

By Elizabeth Howell,?Space.com / July 26, 2012

Curiosity will carry the most advanced payload of scientific gear ever used on Mars' surface, a payload more than ten times as massive as those of earlier Mars rovers. MSL's assignment: Investigate whether conditions have been favorable for microbial life and for preserving clues in the rocks about possible past life.

When NASA's next Mars rover, Curiosity, arrives at the Red Planet next month, it will help pave the way for the humans that might one day follow.

In addition to looking for signs of current and past habitability to extraterrestrial life, the rover, due to land Aug. 6, will learn more about whether Mars could be habitable for humans ? particularly in terms of its weather. The continuous record of Martian weather and radiation Curiosity plans to collect will help future forecasters tell humans ? should we choose to go ? how best to protect themselves in the harsh environment, experts say.

That's why NASA's Human Exploration and Operations Mission Directorate paid to include a radiation detector onboard the car-size Curiosity, the centerpiece of the Mars Science Laboratory mission, which is run by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

?When we were designing Curiosity, we were going to use it for our habitability investigations as well,? said Ashwin Vasavada, MSL's deputy project scientist. ?But it really is paid for and intended to understand the environment humans will experience on Mars.?

The $2.5 billion rover launched Nov. 26, 2011. It is designed to work for at least two years on Mars.

Curiosity will sample the Martian environment every hour through two main instruments: a meteorology station and a radiation detector. The instruments will run even when the rover is sleeping, during the Martian night, to provide a continual stream of data. [Mars Rover Curiosity's Landing Site: Gale Crater (Infographic)]

The Radiation Assessment Detector (RAD), in fact, began running during Curiosity's eight-month journey to Mars. Radiation from the sun and galactic cosmic rays occur throughout the solar system, meaning that humans would be exposed to elevated radiation from the moment they leave Earth's cradling magnetic field. Understanding how much radiation would bombard the spacecraft is the first step to learning how we can shield humans against it.

When Curiosity begins work on the Red Planet, RAD's telescope detectors will run for 15 minutes every hour, measuring a broad range of high-energy radiation in the atmosphere and on the surface.

It's not fully known just how radiation behaves close to the surface. Although orbiting spacecraft such as the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter can measure it from above, it's harder for those spacecraft on high to see radiation close to the ground. Of most concern to scientists are rays that can splinter off from radiation hitting the Martian atmosphere.

House Republicans seen seeking six-month spending extension

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican leaders in the House of Representatives are moving toward seeking a six-month extension of government funding that would avoid the threat of shutdowns until the spring of 2013, Republican lawmakers and aides said on Thursday.

Lawmakers have little stomach for an election-year repeat of last year's bruising budget battles, which brought the federal government to the brink of shutdown several times and further damaged Congress' approval ratings.

But in order to buy budget peace, Republicans are expected to agree to give up most, if not all, of the $19 billion in additional discretionary spending cuts they sought this year.

Aides said that as early as next week, House Speaker John Boehner could announce plans for a continuing resolution that would extend funding for government agencies, the military and for discretionary programs. Congress would need to pass a stop-gap measure before fiscal year-end on September 30.

Sleep like a Dog: How to Choose the Perfect Pet Bed | Pets Best ...

A cute dog with pet health insurance plays in a dog bed.

Along with food, treats, pet insurance and toys, one of the first items a pet owner purchases for a new four-legged family member is a pet bed! With all the different brands, colors and options available it can be hard to select the perfect bed for your furry friend. At P.L.A.Y., we believe pet beds should not just be comfy for pets, but also stylish for their owners and better for our planet. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when choosing a new pet bed:

1. Durability
Like all products, owners should look for a pet bed that is high-quality and made to last. While it?s easy to find a cheap pet bed at a warehouse store, there?s a good chance you?ll go through those just as fast as you go through treats. Poor craftsmanship and low-quality materials can require frequent replacement. Make sure you check out what the filler is made out of; often times it isn?t washable. If you?ve had a pet before, you?ve smelled the wet-dog scent, seen the muck your pet drags in, and know that accidents can happen. Look for a pet bed that is 100% washer and dryer friendly and made with durable materials meant to last.

A cute dog with dog insurance sleeps in a cozy bed.

2. Your Pet?s Preferences
Does your dog like to sleep curled up or stretched out ?superman style?? Does she have allergies to certain materials? Does she shed a lot? These are all things to keep in mind when purchasing a pet bed.

We often hear people say that their furry friends don?t like to sleep on pet beds; well, have you considered what their sleeping preferences are? If your pet likes to stretch out and sleep ?superman style,? try a pillow-type bed. You can find some comfy rectangular and round beds that provide ample stretching room. If your pup likes to curl up and nest, we recommend a bumper or Lounge Bed (something with sides). Also, make sure to select the right size. If you find yourself in between sizes, we always recommend going for the larger.

Many people don?t realize that pet beds can be a cause for discomfort if pets are allergic to the materials. Lots of beds are filled with cedar chips, something that is completely un-washable and also something that many pets are allergic to. If your pet tends to have a lot of allergies, be on the safe side and look for something hypoallergenic like 100% natural cotton or poly-fiber filling.

Or Call 877-738-7237 to speak with a Pets Best Insurance Agent to Add a Pet to Your Current Policy

If your pet is a shedder, look for a bed made with materials that is easily washed or keeps loose hair at bay. Natural cotton or micro-suede are both good options.

3. Style
Since a pet bed is often a large piece of furniture in your home, why not choose something that complements your d?cor? Often pet beds can be an eyesore; the days of plain colors or dull plaid are long gone! In addition to considering your pets preferences, consider yours as well! You can now find pet beds with beautiful aesthetics made to look great in your home and match your personal tastes and style.

4. Values and Giving Back
With so many options, why not choose a pet bed company that shares your values. You can now find eco-friendly pet beds and those made from recycled materials. At P.L.A.Y. we fill our beds with PlanetFill? filling which is made out of 100% post-consumer recycled plastic bottles. In just one Extra Large Lounge Bed, we keep 108 plastic bottles from going into a landfill. Additionally, we do our best to minimize packaging and use recycled paper for our boxes.

Being a pet owner, there?s a good chance you?re an animal lover (and maybe even a pet health insurance enthusiast!) But many people don?t realize that with their buying choices, they could also help an animal in need. Through P.L.A.Y.?s Warm Bellies Initiative with the Petfinder Foundation, we donate a mat to a homeless pet with every eligible purchase made on our website. So by giving your pet a new luxury pet bed, you?re also giving a needy pet a warmer belly.

These are just a few things to keep in mind when looking for a new bed for your furry friend. For more info about P.L.A.Y. and the products we make, visit our website at www.PetPlay.com.

(AP) ? Sherman Hemsley, the actor who made the irascible, bigoted George Jefferson of "The Jeffersons" one of television's most memorable characters and a symbol for urban upward mobility, has died. He was 74.

Police in El Paso, Texas, said late Tuesday that Hemsley was found dead at a local home where neighbors said he'd lived for years. A statement from police said no foul play is suspected and that the exact cause of death is pending.

The Philadelphia-born Hemsley first played the blustering black Harlem businessman on CBS's "All in the Family" before he was spun off onto "The Jeffersons," which in 11 seasons from 1975 to 1985 became one of TV's most successful sitcoms ? particularly noteworthy with its mostly black cast.

With the gospel-style theme song of "Movin' On Up," the hit show depicted the wealthy former neighbors of Archie and Edith Bunker in Queens as they made their way on New York's Upper East Side. Hemsley and the Jeffersons (Isabel Sanford played his wife) often dealt with contemporary issues of racism, but more frequently reveled in the sitcom archetype of a short-tempered, opinionated patriarch trying, often unsuccessfully to control his family.

Hemsley's feisty, diminutive father with an exaggerated strut was a kind of black corollary to Archie Bunker ? a stubborn, high-strung man who had a deep dislike for whites (his favorite word for them was honkies). Yet unlike the blue-collar Bunker, played by Carroll O'Connor, he was a successful businessman whose was as rich as he was crass. His wife, Weezie, was often his foil ? yet provided plenty of zingers as well.

Despite the character's many faults ? money-driven, prejudiced, temperamental, a boor ? Hemsley managed to make the character endearing as well, part of the reason it stayed on the air for so long. Much like O'Connor's portrayal of Archie Bunker, deep down, Hemsley's Jefferson loved his family, his friends (even the ones he relentlessly teased) and had a good heart. His performance was Emmy and Golden Globe nominated.

"He was a love of a guy" and "immensely talented," said Norman Lear, producer of "The Jeffersons" and "All in the Family," after learning of his death.

"When the Jeffersons moved in next door to the Bunkers, I wanted to deliver the George Jefferson who could stand up to Archie Bunker," Lear recalled Tuesday.

"It took some weeks before I remembered having seen Sherman in 'Purlie' on Broadway."

Hemsley read for the part and "the minute he opened his mouth he was George Jefferson," Lear said. He said Hemsley was smaller than O'Connor's Archie but "he was every bit as strong as Archie."

Sherman Alexander Hemsley, though, was far less feisty. The son of a printing press-working father and a factory-working mother, Hemsley served in the Air Force and worked for eight years as a clerk for the Postal Service.

Having studied acting as an adolescent at the Philadelphia Academy of Dramatic Arts, he began acting in New York workshops and theater companies, including the Negro Ensemble Company. For years, he kept his job at the post office while acting at night, before transitioning to acting full-time.

He made his Broadway debut in 1970's "Purlie," a musical adaptation of Ossie Davis' Jim Crow-era play "Purlie Victorious." (Hemsley would later star in a 1981 made-for-TV version of "Purlie," as well.) It was while touring the show that Hemsley was approached by Lear about playing a character on the sitcom that would become "All in the Family."

Hemsley joined the show in 1973, immediately catapulting himself from an obscure theater actor to a hit character on the enormously popular show. Two years later, "The Jeffersons" was spun off. Among the numerous "All in the Family" spin-offs ("Maude," ''Archie Bunker's Place, "704 Hauser"), "The Jeffersons" was the longest-running.

The character, the owner of a chain of dry-cleaning stores, was devised, Hemsley said, as "pompous and feisty."

"All of it was really hard for because ? rude, I don't like to be that way," Hemsley said in a 2003 interview for the Archive of American Television. "But it was the character, I had to do it. I had to be true to the character. If I was to pull back something, then it just wouldn't work."

After "The Jeffersons" was abruptly cancelled, Hemsley starred in the sitcom "Amen" as a fiery Philadelphia church deacon, Ernest Frye. The show latest five years, running 1986 to 1991.

Jackee Harry, a longtime friend who made appearances on the show, said she and Hemsley had planned to tour in the musical "Ain't Misbehavin'''. She said they had discussed it recently and that he seemed in good health and in good spirits.

"It's a sad, sad, sad day," she said from her home in Beverly Hills.

She recalled when the two of them were on a Manhattan sidewalk during the era of "The Jeffersons," and passersby went wild.

"He got mauled and mugged," she laughed. "He said, 'What's all the screaming about?' He was so popular and he didn't even know it."

She described him as "a very private person unlike George Jefferson. But he was very kind and very sweet, and generous to a fault."

Hemsley frequently turned up as a guest on sitcoms like "Family Matters," ''The Hughleys" and even, in a voice role, "Family Guy." He twice reprised George Jefferson, appearing as his famous character on "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" and, in 2011, on "House of Payne."

Hemsley, whose films include 1979's "Love at First Bite," 1987's "Stewardess School" and 1987's "Ghost Fever," released an album, "Ain't That a Kick in the Head," in 1989.

DURHAM ? NC Central's head football coach is back on the job. Henry Frazier III was arrested May 14 on charges he assaulted his wife. Central then suspended him pending the outcome of the case.

Monday, the university allowed him to return to work, saying his legal issues had been resolved.

?I am pleased that Coach Frazier's legal issues have been resolved and he is now prepared to move forward with the responsibilities and duties as NCCU's head football coach effective today,? said NCCU Director of Athletics Dr. Ingrid Wicker-McCree.

Court documents show Frazier admitted his guilt and asked for a prayer for judgement. On a Domestic Violence Deferral Statement of Guilt, he wrote, "On May 13, 2012 I Henry Frazier got into an argument with Lanier Turner and proceeded to pray for her by placing annoited [sic] oil on her against her wishes."

Under the prayer for judgement, if Frazier completes a domestic violence abuser course, his conviction will stand & he will not face any additional punishment. He also can not have any contact with his wife, except for issues regarding their children.

Frazier spent his first day back at work answering reporters' questions about his domestic violence arrest.

?It has been a slight embarrassment to the university, to me personally,? Frazier said. ?In a million years, I never would have wished, would have thought this would have occurred. I wouldn't put this on anyone. But things happen in life and you have to figure out a way to get through things.?

Frazier says he looks forward to putting this embarrassing incident behind him and focusing once again on football.

?I'd like to formally apologize to my family, North Carolina Central University and the supporters, my coaches, [and] my players for allowing my personal life to become a distraction to this fine institution,? he said.

?Coach Frazier is remorseful for the distraction to the university,? said NCCU Chancellor Charlie Nelms. ?North Carolina Central University stands on century-old values and high standards that we expect and require from all members of our community. These core principles include mutual respect and the absence of violence in resolving conflict.?

The leadership team within our division understands that responsibility, accountability and commitment to our students and the university are critical.?
