Ader Investment Management boss (and former IGT nemesis) Jason Ader says online gambling represents an existential threat to its brick-and-mortar counterparts. On Monday, Ader made an appearance on the CNBC network?s Talking Numbers segment, during which he described online gambling as ?probably the single worst threat to land-based casinos that I?ve seen in 20-plus years.?
Ader (pictured right, having just been targeted for destruction by an online gambling operator) cautioned that it wasn?t yet clear how regulated US online gambling would present itself, whether it would be limited to poker-only or full-on casino gaming. But Ader warned that ?if you?re able to bring wagering ? sports wagering, poker, baccarat, slots ? real money to people?s homes, it?s going to have a devastating consequence on riverboat gaming, Native American gaming, [and] Las Vegas.? (Translation: to hell with Atlantic City.)
Asked why brick-and-mortar casino companies shouldn?t welcome the option to extend their businesses online, Ader suggested that ?who at the end of the day owns online customers, I?d argue, is much more connected to Google?s business, Facebook?s business, Amazon?s business ? The online players really have the competitive advantage in getting online customers. They, to me, seem like they may well be the hidden beneficiaries to the extent we get a proliferation of online gaming and again, it comes at the expense of the land-based operators.?
It?s worth noting that Ader is a board member of Las Vegas Sands, whose boss Sheldon Adelson?s antipathy toward online gambling is the stuff of comedic legend. The online/land-based zero-sum paradigm espoused by the LVS clique has long been rubbished by the man whose name this site bears, and similar sentiments were recently espoused by Peter Brooks, president and COO of Genting UK, which, until Rank Group acquired 19 Gala Casinos? properties, was the UK?s biggest land-based casino operator.
Speaking at the recent World Gaming Executive Summit, Brooks said ?online does not cannibalize land-based, for us. The experiences on offer are very different. One ? online ? is a solo experience and the other is a social experience.? Brooks said land-based customers weren?t ?drawn to online gambling to the detriment of the land-based industry.? As someone speaking from a market in which the full range of online gambling products has been peacefully co-existing with their brick-and-mortar forebears for years, Brooks presumably has some idea of what he?s talking about.

PARIS (AP) -- Troops from 13 African countries that took part in the French-led war against al-Qaida-linked extremists in Mali marched with the French military during the Bastille Day parade in Paris on Sunday to honor their role in the conflict.
U.N. troops in blue berets who are helping to stabilize the west African nation of Mali also paraded with thousands of other soldiers down the Champs-Elysees Avenue in France's annual tribute to military might. It marks the storming of the Bastille prison July 14, 1789, by angry Paris crowds that helped spark the French Revolution.
Despite the triumphal display, which included flyovers by fighter jets, tanks and giant trucks mounted with land-to-air defense systems, the realities in Mali suggest that President Francois Hollande's military intervention has had mixed results.
The mission he launched in January helped the Malian government retake control of much of the country from al-Qaida-linked extremists who had seized northern Mali and threatened the capital. The nation is to hold elections July 28, but tensions involving rebel Tuaregs in the north linger, along with political instability.
Sunday's events, however, focused on the positive.
"It's a victory that was won," Hollande said in an interview after the parade with the France 2 and TF-1 television stations in the garden of the presidential Elysee Palace. "Look at what happened. It was a victory for Africa, a victory against terrorism, and pride that we must have."
He said earlier the presence of African troops in Paris on the French national day was a "tribute to those who actively helped to banish terrorism from the Malian territory."
Referring to trips he's made to Africa, including a February visit to Mali, four weeks after the start of the French intervention, Hollande said, "I was saluted in Africa, not for what I said but for what I did."
He noted that some extremists once lodged in Mali escaped into southern Libya and other neighboring countries. He said those nations need support, "but we won't make war everywhere."
Hollande oversaw the display of military might that France rolls out each year on Bastille Day with Mali interim President Dioncounda Traore and U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon at his sides. Defense ministers from the African nations represented in the parade also were present.
French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said before the parade that the display is "the mark of a solidarity that concretely expressed itself in Mali, and of a common destiny, even beyond the limits of continents, of which we have every reason to be proud."
But some critics say the Mali operation and African presence in the parade reflect France's ambiguous and sometimes patronizing relations with the continent -especially with former colonies such as Mali - often referred to as "Francafrique."
The French non-governmental organization Survie, which is fighting against neocolonialism, condemned "the self-proclaimed role of gendarme of Africa that France claimed in Mali."
"This parade gives a scent of victory to a military operation which is far from being reasonably presented like that, given the numerous shadows that surround it and the remaining uncertainties concerning its outcome," said Fabrice Tarrit, the president of the association.
The critics also include Africans.
"Knowing the history of France, especially French armies with Africa, it doesn't sound good," said Senegalese rapper Keyti, whose real name is Cheikh Sene, 40.
"This last decade we've been trying to be really independent from the French army, especially since they had camps in certain countries around Africa," he said. "And now with what happened in Mali, what's still happening there, it's like they found another way to come in."
Around 50 Malian troops marched in formation Sunday followed by soldiers from Benin, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Chad and Togo.
They were followed by troops from the U.N. stabilization mission in Mali, which took over the French-led military operation on July 1. Some French soldiers who participated in the Mali operation, called Serval, also marched, and aircraft used in Mali, notably to provide cover for ground troops, were featured in the air display.
France had more than 4,000 troops at the height of the campaign, and is now gradually reducing that. France will keep about 1,000 soldiers in Mali after the end of 2013.
In all, 4,800 troops marched in front of the presidential stage Sunday, along with 241 horses, 265 vehicles and 58 planes.
Bringing up the rear was an array of 35 helicopters, used in wartime and for civilian missions. Precision parachutists landed in front of the presidential stand to close the parade.

Vine for Android updated with capture widget
Vine, one of the popular services for creating short, looping videos to share among your social network buddies has updated its Android application. The latest version of Vine for Android comes with a host of new features along with few performance improvements and bug fixes.
The update brings the Android app on par with the iPhone version and also comes with a unique feature, which goes by the name ?capture widget? that lets you jump straight to the recording screen from your home screen.
Vine for Android now allows you to browse and submit your short videos to 15 new channels. You can now share your favorite posts with all your followers on Vine in one single tap.
There is a new capture tool in the latest Vine for Android update. The grid overlay for the recording screen allows you to position shots more accurately, while the new ghost mode shows you a copy of the last frame from the previous shot. Lastly, there is a new focus button added.
The update version of Vine for Android can be downloaded from the Google Play Store.

Aggressive Debt Collector Pays $3.2M Fine
(Newser) ? It's a little solace perhaps for people besieged by phone calls morning, noon, and night by debt-collection firm Expert Global Solutions: The company agreed to pay the FTC a $3.2 million fine and ease up on the harassment of debtors, reports Reuters. It's the biggest such fine ever levied on a third-party debt collector. "They called after being asked to stop; after they promised to stop; early in the morning; late at night; at people's workplaces?when they knew the employers prohibited the calls," writes an FTC official.
Those types of tactics aren't just annoying, they're illegal under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act and the FTC Act, reports ABC News. Among the changes: The company and its subsidiaries will stop calling people if the debt is being disputed, at least until an investigation takes place. The company also has to record 75% of its calls and keep the recordings for at least three months. (Being a debt collector can be a lucrative job.)

What make theme parks popular vacation destinations?

One of the hallmarks of the Fourth of July weekend here in the United States is that it?s a big travel weekend. Many people take advantage of the holiday to plan vacations (it?s an extra day off, after all). And if children are a part of the traveling troupe, theme parks are often popular destinations.
S is a huge fan of roller coasters. As a result, we usually make biannual trips to the Six Flags family of parks?the one in New Jersey is close enough to arrange group trips. And theme parks work their way into most of the trips we take if the opportunity presents itself. There was a fateful trip to Busch Garden in Williamsburg, Virginia where we were caught in a hurricane-like storm on our way back from the park. We were in a brand new car in zero visibility conditions, trying to figure out to close the sun roof while the rain poured in. Ah, this is the stuff that memories are made of!
I?ve only been to Disney World once. It was one of the first ?big? vacations that S and I took. It was an experience. Disney marketing isn?t kidding when they say it?s the happiest/most magical place on earth?it?s intense. And the experience stays with you. It?s the promise of this experience draws people: Disneyland receives approximately 10 million visitors annually (1). And lots of folks are repeat visitors. It may not be for everyone: I know people who absolutely refuse to have anything to do with the magic as well as some who aren?t comfortable around costumed representatives, but overall they seem to be in the minority given the volume of traffic these places experience. Researchers have suggested that Disney generates a successful experience because our brains are responsive and receptive to art, creativity, storytelling, humor, wit, music, fantasy, and morality, all of which may have been important to social development?and feature heavily in the ?Disney experience??and successful theme parks?in a rather amplified way.
Humans have large brains, which are really expensive to produce. Researchers have not yet determined why our brains are so large, but everything from diet to climate change to social competition to changes in gestation has been proposed. Geoffrey Miller, an evolutionary psychologist, suggested that big brains are a result of sexual selection. He argues that the brain is ?an entertainment system that evolved to stimulate other brains? in an effort to attract mates (2). Miller?s ?mating mind hypothesis? states
The large size of the brain evolved because mates (in most cases females) favoured a mate (in most cases males) with increased abilities to produce such aspects of culture as art, creativity, storytelling, humour, wit, music, fantasy, and morality (3).
These ?courtship tools? are meant to attract sexual partners. However, Miller?s hypothesis is not supported by the actual development of the human brain, which does not display the characteristics of a sexually selected trait. Two of the the major points of divergence that researchers Palmer and Coe discuss are the lack of sexual dimorphism and the actual growth of the brain. Male brains do not significantly differ from female brains:
Although there do appear to be clearly evolved sexual differences in specific parts of the brain directly related to mating (e.g., mate preferences, jealousy), there are no similarly striking differences related to production of and responsiveness to the traits he is attempting to explain (art, creativity, storytelling, humour, wit, music, fantasy, and morality) (4).
And if the brain were a sexually selected feature, it would become more prominent after puberty. This isn?t the case: The human brain weighs about 25% of its adult weight at birth, and it doubles in weight in about 6 months. At puberty, there isn?t another of these types of gains. The brain completes most of its development within the first few years of life.
As an alternative to understanding why specific forms of entertainment are so appealing, Palmer and Coe (2010) instead suggest they reflect parenting strategies intended to influence the behavior of offspring. The ?parenting mind hypothesis? proposes that the size of the human brain developed via natural selection in response to parental ability to influence behavior?big brains allowed offspring to store and replicate behaviors modeled by parents that enabled survival and reproduction (5). This latter hypothesis takes into account one possible reason why children develop language skills so early in life: language helps them receive information from their parents, which increases their fitness for survival.
Where does the Disney franchise fit in this discussion? Palmer and Coe propose that Disneyland (which is not Disney World, but I would imagine the experience is essentially the same: extreme stimulation of the senses) is an extension of the traits that are important to the parenting mind hypothesis:
Although Disneyland and fairy tales in general are often mistakenly seen as mere entertainment, they both clearly provide moral lessons. Pinocchio warns children not to tell a lie. Cinderella tells children that virtue has rewards, and the three pigs teach children about planning and industriousness (6).
They suggest that our susceptibility to these forms of entertainment allow Disneyland?and other forms of art and entertainment?to exist. But I would amend that to say that any potential susceptibility to these traits allows the Disney franchise and other good examples of art, creativity, storytelling, humor, wit, music, fantasy, and morality?such as movies and plays?to be successful because they help us construct (non-sexual) social connections around these messages which make them more effective. Packaged with interactive experiences, visitors get to live tales and the experiences create lasting memories because they reinforces messages we have already received previously.
In other parks, rides typically also have some sort of story or theme attached to them, even if they aren?t of the animated variety. For example, at Six Flags Great Adventure, the Kingda Ka roller coaster is designed to fit into a jungle theme. The entire experience contributes to this theme from the music played for waiting riders to the decorations to the name of the ride itself, which is a distant reference to a Bengal tiger housed in the nearby safari. While Disney can claim popular story lines, the actual tactical aspects of the theme park can also function similarly. Line management teaches patience and orderliness with the ride being the ultimate reward.
One of the things Palmer and Coe could have explored further is the connection between relationship building and the traits linked to the Disney experience. Art, creativity, storytelling, humor, wit, music, fantasy, and morality may be important elements in the relationships we develop and maintain?not in a sexual sense, but in terms of network building. The researchers touch upon this briefly in their conclusion, and it seems to warrant exploration because it has broad implications in terms of how our social networks are engaged with these traits. When we experience an instance of storytelling or humor or music with someone else, we?re creating a bond through that experience that helps define our places within our network relative to each other. Revisiting stories could then be an act of reaffirming ties?which could help us understand why people return to Disney theme parks and other forms of creative entertainment.

Want to take back the Senate? Pay up, GOP
Republican Senate leaders, sensing an opportunity to pick up several seats and possibly win the majority, have a blunt message for their GOP colleagues: Open your wallets.
For years, GOP senators have been stingy with the National Republican Senatorial Committee, refusing to make large transfers of money out of their personal campaign accounts that could help their party compete in neck-and-neck races across the country. For 2012, Democratic senators transferred nearly five times more to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee than Republicans gave to the NRSC.

It won?t be easy: Republicans will have to knock off well-financed Democratic incumbents, defend Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and limit the internecine primary warfare that has twice cost them a chance at the majority.
Top GOP senators say that?s exactly the point: Not maximizing the NRSC?s operations could be another unforced error. In short, without more money, you?ll still be in the minority.
?I?ve been constantly explaining to my colleagues, the importance of us coming together,? said NRSC Chairman Jerry Moran of Kansas. ?And dollars matter. And we need your help to put dollars in the bank.?
The Senate and House campaign committees have certainly been marginalized in recent election cycles with the growth of high-spending super PACs that can raise and dump unlimited sums of money to influence races across the country.
But the committees do play key roles in recruiting candidates, making tactical decisions and, of course, launching a barrage of 30-second attack ads in an attempt to shape perceptions of their respective opponents.
The NRSC had about $7 million in cash and raised $14 million through the end of May, compared with $9.6 million in the bank for the DSCC, which has received $22 million in contributions. To help make up the difference, NRSC leaders have scheduled a July 18 fundraising day when senators will be calling up donors directly seeking solicitations, with at least a dozen Republicans planning on attending, according to GOP aides.
?I think we should ask our members to do more, particularly in a year when we really do have an opportunity to gain seats,? said Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, the chief fundraiser for the NRSC.
That?s where senators like Alabama?s Richard Shelby enter the picture.
Shelby hasn?t had to worry about a tough reelection bid in years, but he?s sitting on a war chest of $17.7 million through the end of the first quarter, with no plans of making large transfers to the NRSC. He explained his lack of giving by pointing out that he?s appeared at fundraisers and made contributions to the committee through his leadership PAC.
But asked why he hasn?t transferred big bucks out of his massive war chest, Shelby said his donors wouldn?t be happy.
?I raise money out of my campaign for myself ? not for you or anyone else,? Shelby said. ?I tell my givers who it?s for. If they knew I was going to raise it to give it away, they probably wouldn?t give it away.?

SKorean president in Beijing for summit with Xi
BEIJING (AP) ? The Chinese and South Korean presidents called Thursday for a swift resumption of six-nation North Korean nuclear disarmament talks after a summit that brought together Pyongyang's archrival and its biggest ally.
President Park Geun-hye four-day visit marks her first formal discussions with the new Chinese administration led by President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang. Talks will also focus on booming economic ties between the two, highlighted by the unusually large, high-powered trade delegation traveling with Park.
The meetings are seen as piling further pressure on the North to rejoin the talks, and Xi said improving conditions on the peninsula boded well for new discussions.
"We hope all sides can seize this opportunity to work to return to the six-party talks as soon as possible," Xi told reporters after his talks with Park at the Great Hall of the People, the seat of the legislature in the heart of Beijing.
Park said the sides agreed on the need to prevent North Korea having nuclear weapons "under any circumstances" and to "preserve the peace and stability of Korean Peninsula."
The two also witnessed the signing of agreements on energy cooperation, trade and other areas.
Park, a self-taught Mandarin speaker, has said she is keen to enlist China's leaders in the drive for new North Korean denuclearization discussions that would also include the U.S., Russia, and Japan.
The China-hosted talks with Pyongyang have been stalled since 2009 over the question of how to verify that North Korea is fulfilling its commitments to dismantle its nuclear facilities.
Park was scheduled to meet Li on Friday.
The calls for new talks follow China's frustration with its neighbor and longstanding communist ally for having ramped up tensions with last year's long-range missile launch and February's third nuclear weapon test.
Beijing showed its displeasure by supporting tightened U.N. sanctions and cracking down on North Korean banking activity.
While China is North Korea's biggest source of diplomatic and economic support, China's trade and other interactions with the South are far larger and more diverse. Ordinary Chinese are also big fans of South Korean pop culture and high-tech wares, and there is a growing sentiment among urban intellectuals that China should not sacrifice international credibility for the sake of coddling Pyongyang.
Despite the pressure to rejoin talks, Kim Jong Un's mercurial North Korean regime appears to remain wary.
Park has said that any resumption of talks must be preceded by signs that the North is serious about following through on its disarmament commitments, echoing the position of the U.S. Washington does not want to be drawn into talks that serve only to relieve pressure on Pyongyang, provide it a platform to seek much-needed aid, and buy it more time to further its nuclear weapons program.
Yet, after top North Korean negotiator Kim Kye Gwan visited Beijing earlier this month for talks, Chinese analysts said Pyongyang seemed more interested in improving its damaged ties with China than in swiftly moving toward new six-nation talks.
While Beijing has remained neutral over recent developments, Chinese scholars say Xi's government will seek an intermediary role to create conditions for a restoration of talks. They warn, however, that Beijing would oppose harsher sanctions or other measures that could spark a backlash from Pyongyang or further destabilize the regime of the young and inexperienced Kim, who took over following his father's death 18 months ago.
"It's very hard to say whether the meeting will produce any new proposals, but, following the third nuclear test, I think China and every other country involved realizes the seriousness of the need to get North Korea back into talks," said Zhang Liangui, a researcher with the ruling Communist Party's main research and training institute in Beijing.
Park's visit should also help smooth over strains in ties between China and South Korea over China's refusal to criticize Pyongyang following the sinking of a South Korean navy ship in early 2010 and shelling of one of its islands by a North Korean artillery unit later that year.
Park's appreciation for Chinese culture should also help foster positive relations. The Beijing stage of her trip, which includes meetings with business groups and a speech to university students, is to be followed by a stop at the ancient capital of Xi'an, a cultural hub that is a favorite destination for South Korean investors.
Park is traveling with a record 71-strong business delegation, highlighting the close economic ties that have lifted China above the U.S. as South Korea's top trading partner. Two-way trade hit $215 billion last year, with South Korea's exports of semiconductors, mobile phones, cars and industrial products giving it a trade surplus of more than $50 billion.
Business delegates include leaders of South Korean industry, including the chairmen of Hyundai Motor Group and LG Group.

Whited, who has been competing in rodeo events since he was eight years old, qualified for the NJHFR through the Texas Junior High National Finals and is the state representative in Tie-Down Calf Roping. WearIT brings its prototype smart watch to CE Week, we go eyes-on
It'd be hard to go hands-on with the WearIT smart watch given that it's still very much a prototype and its touchscreen is ... well, it's not enabled yet. But we did get a chance to put our hands to the device and snap a gaggle of pictures, highlighting its 1.54-inch capacitive touchscreen and trio of buttons (each of which will correspond to specific applications, we're told). The concept with WearIT's watch is that it's a standalone device -- "We're getting closer to Dick Tracy every day," a company rep told us. While the device isn't quite up to Tracy's standards (no phone functionality, for instance), it assuredly packs more power than the aging detective's wrist gadget.
A Cortex A8 600 MHz CPU and 256MB of RAM are at the heart of the smart watch, backed up by a 550 mAh lithium ion rechargeable battery. 4GB of storage is embedded inside, along with 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth / Bluetooth LE, ANT+, and a USB 2.0 port (when using the charging clip, included with the watch). Oh, and it runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, though it's pared down considerably for the screen size. We'll have a much closer look at WearIT's smart watch later this year -- the device is expected to arrive in the US starting in November and will retail for $400.

The once-lost animal, a male named Rusty, is just less than a year old and has been on exhibit at the zoo for just three weeks, after arriving from Nebraska in April. The precocious escapee had last been seen in his zoo pen Sunday evening and was not there Monday morning, at which time the zoo sounded a ?Code Green? alert for a missing zoo animal.
Rusty was believed to be still within the zoo, keeping his summer vacation local and hiding in a tree, zoo staff said. It was considered reasonably unlikely that the red panda had high-tailed it toward the White House to express his thoughts on animal conservationism or skipped the country altogether to China, to holiday with friends there.
?It is most likely that he has not really left the vicinity. He would have to have some very strong motivation to leave the area,? spokeswoman Pamela Baker-Masson told The Washington Post.
Well, that strong motivation might have been there: a determined bachelor?s last hurrah. The zoo has one other red panda, a female named Shama, and told The Washington Post that it had been planning to breed the two. And the enterprising panda could not have chosen a better neighborhood for its prenuptial jaunt: Adams Morgan, a section of D.C. noted for its young and throbbing club scene.
How the partying red panda escaped is somewhat mystifying. The wires on his cage, which deliver a small electronic shock, were on and functional.?
The red panda, which looks something like a mix between a cat, a bear, and a (miniaturized) giant panda, is considered a vulnerable species, with just some 10,000 of them in the world, mostly in China but also in Bhutan and northern Nepal and Myanmar. It is only distantly related to the giant panda and is more closely related to weasels and raccoons.
The zoo?s giant pandas are still in their pens, and are sleeping happily, the zoo said.

Network Toolbox (for iOS)
There is a really cool app that turns your iPad (or other iOS device) into a network toolbox, and that app is named, appropriately enough, Network Toolbox for iOS. Not only is it chock full of networking utilities that can help analyze and troubleshoot a network, but it's also a beautiful app, and one that is well in-line with Apple's design aesthetics.
Support and Downloading
Network Toolbox for iOS, recently updated to version 2.01.01, is available in iTunes for $5.99. It's supported on iPhone 3Gs, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5; third, fourth and fifth generation-iPod touches; and the iPad. The app is optimized for iPhone 5 and requires iOS 5 or later.
I installed the app on an iPad2. It was a quick and easy install, and the developer wisely displays a disclaimer message upon first opening the app: Not intended to assist with analyzing remote sites with the intention of breaking into or exploiting services on those sites.The warning makes sense. Network Toolbox provides just about every utility a would-be hacker needs to access a poorly secured network, as you will read about in the next section on the app's features.
Features and the App in Use
After you close that warning message, the app's home screen appears. The interface is clear and sharp. On the iPad, the design of the app looks gorgeous. There are 15 icons, each an individual networking utility. There are also five menu items at the bottom of the app's display: Tools, which gets you back to this home screen no matter where in icon you are; Bookmarks, for quickly stashing and accessing information within the app; Resources, which provides help information; News, which provides updates about the app and developer; and Settings?, which gives you customization options.
Device is the first icon. Tapping it displays information about the device on which you have Network Toolbox installed such as hostname, IP address and other system information. I went into Resources to look for a user guide or some sort of getting started information. Instructions there recommend starting in Devices and first performing a network scan and then a port scan to information on your local network.
You can do this in Devices by clicking on an arrow button to the right of the shown device IP address. Doing so, pulls up another menu of options including: Copy, Bookmark, E-Mail, Domain Info, Scan Network, Ping, Scan Ports and more. Most of the utilities in this menu you can also access from the apps's home screen.
I initiated a network scan by choosing the Network icon on the home screen. You enter the IP address range of the network you want to scan. It took a few minutes for the app to discover and display the 13 network nodes I have connected.?
I then performed a port scan on the network by tapping the "Telnet/Ports" icon. The scan will look for any open ports on a network?great for keeping tabs on security.
SHODAN is another icon on the home screen. The SHODAN utility allows you to search for devices online by city, country, hostname, operating system, IP address, or port.
There is also a Map icon. This pulls up a very detailed map (similar to Google Maps) based on an address or latitude and longitude coordinates you enter.
Other tools on the home screen are "old-school" networking tools. One is an ICANN utility (ICANN is the organization responsible for handling IP address spaces and managing domain name spaces.) This utilty allows you to query a hostname or IP address. With the ICMP Ping utility, you can, of course, send a ping to an IP address or domain. Other tools include ones for connecting to FTP, Secure FTP, and make SSH connections.
There is even a file explorer utility which will let you manage and access file with a command line interface commands. This is because iOS is Unix-based and Unix uses shell command such as md (make directory)?commands that can be executed with the app's file explorer. Because it's command line-based, it's a bit harder for novices who want to access their devices? files.
A better option may be a dedicated, graphical file explorer app such as the X-Plore app, I looked at for Android. While X-Plore is only for Android, there are file manager for iOS in iTunes. Still, Network Toolbox's file explorer utility is still beneficial, since iOS natively lacks such a feature.
Customization
As mentioned before, there are some customization options. Some include disabling screen rotation, showing the tools icon as a list, and turning on and off the start-up screen. You can also customize the tools that appear on the home screen. There are also a few security settings, such as enabling password hiding and setting a limit to or clearing the history list.
Resources is where you can find information as I did about getting started with the app and some light information about a few of the utilities. However, I would have like to see at least a blurb on what each utility is for, at minimum, at least a link perhaps to the developer's website for a more detailed user guide.
Centralized, Networking Toolkit
Network Toolbox for iOS is well-designed and really turns an iOS device into a networking toolkit. It's a one-stop, central console for many of the classic networking tools and utilities that have been around for quite some time. Network Toolbox for iOS gets four out of five stars for networking utility software on iOS and an Editors' Choice for iOS networking apps.

LA settles health insurance lawsuit for $6M | 89.3 KPCC

The Anthem Blue Cross headquarters. The L.A. city attorney has settled for $6 million in a lawsuit alleging the health insurer had illegally dropped more than 6,000 policyholders.
The?Los?Angeles?city attorney has settled a lawsuit that alleged health insurer Anthem Blue Cross illegally dropped more than 6,000 policyholders from coverage.
Thursday's $6 million settlement is far less than the $1 billion in fines and restitution former City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo threatened when the lawsuit was filed in 2008.
Chief Deputy City Attorney William Carter says none of the people who initially worked on the case for Delgadillo still work in the office and the current staff is satisfied with the settlements.
Delgadillo filed a similar lawsuit seeking $1 billion in fines and restitution from Blue Shield of California in 2008. It was settled for $2 million in 2011.
Anthem Blue Cross is a subsidiary of Indianapolis-based WellPoint Inc.
