Blended Family Moments: Featured Reader Christi Tolbert: Respect ...

Mother and Stepmother of nine shares how respecting one another and having boundaries can help a blended family succeed.

Being a blended family, we always need to remember that it's no longer just us. There are not only your set of rules and boundaries but there is also the rules and boundaries established by your mate. Your children are used to your way of doing things and your mate's children are used to their way if doing things.?

As much as we hope our relationships blend perfectly (and its why we unite to make one blended family) this is not always the case.?

Once you have children and you raise them ( or are in the process of raising them) you need to remember that they are not always going to adjust as easy as adults. If you have a child who is a toddler your family will blend together a little easier. It will blend easier- even with the stipulations and boundaries set by the parent who is no longer in the home- because the toddler is young. Teens and pre-teens will have a slightly more challenging time because of the overwhelming changes going on in their own lives. When you try to blend them with another family small situations can become big ones.?

If you are a step-parent in a blended family you will be expected to communicate with the biological parent who is with you in the home and the parent who is not in the home. There is a need to find common ground and respectable boundaries. Once this has been established, you will find it easier to deal with each other throughout the child's life.?

I think a step-parent should not confront the biological parent that lives outside the home about a problem without giving their partner (the biological parent) a chance to speak with the biological parent first. Sometimes the biological parents will disagree. Allow the two of them to work things out without interfering unless completely necessary or invited by the out of home parent to step in. Doing this shows respect for both biological parents.

When you are thinking about forming a blended family it is very important for you - the biological parent- and your children to have a "talk" or family meeting. You want to do this in order to get everyone prepared for the change that will take effect when you blend your family with another. As the bio-parent you will need to make your children aware of any behavioral expectations that you have. This includes talking to them about respecting their step-parent. (The new step-parent should be doing the same with their children.) Then, the two of you should try to talk to all the children together, carefully outlining behavioral expectations. If you don't talk to the kids together they may test behavioral boundaries that you and the step-parent set- especially teens. Once the ground rules have been laid, it will be important for you to communicate expectations to the biological parent outside of the home. This allows them to also be on the same page. If you fail to talk to the biological parent outside of the home, the first time one of you slip up, the teens will see an opening to manipulate one or both of you. If that happens, it may never get back to the harmony that was once established.?

?

Your spouse should be number one, and the children should understand this philosophy. They may not understand at first so it is always important for you to show them that? they are also number one - but they are in their own category. Make sure that your children know that they also are a priority for you.

In closing, remember that the children will be used to obeying the rules given by you and the bio-parent that lives outside of the home. For this reason it is crucial for respect and boundaries to be set with that parent. If the two of you bring the children into your disagreements, or have disagreements about the children, try to work things out calmly. All members of a blended family are required to worked out situations reasonably. Under no circumstances, is it acceptable for biological parents, step-parents or other siblings to pit the children against one another. Neither is it okay for the children to pit the parents against one another. When you have established the boundaries, and respect the other parties needs, it will be nearly impossible for anyone to manipulate the blended family into turning on one another.

Most importantly; put your house in order prior to combining it with another house.?

Tooksgate: Is The Criminal Bar Finally Eating Itself? | Legal Cheek

Forget the rights and wrongs of the decision by two Tooks' barristers to start a company charging wannabes for pupillage application advice from their head of chambers, Michael Mansfield QC. And consider how it reflects on the wider criminal Bar...

In the good old days, when publicly funded legal work was well-remunerated, barristers would never have dreamed of making money off law students. Even if they had no issue with the ethics of for-profit pupillage advice, their time would have been more profitably spent doing legal work.

Now, with fees for junior criminal barristers dipping below minimum wage levels, that's no longer true. Yet applications for the Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC) are at their highest for years.

In this week's podcast, College of Law GDL student Alice Christian?? who was one of the first students to tweet about the ?186-to-see-Michael-Mansfield event?? explains to Legal Cheek trio Lucy Pether, Kevin Poulter and Alex Aldridge why, in spite of everything, she still wants to be a criminal barrister...

Korean operators warn Europe of "curse" of 4G networks

BARCELONA (Reuters) - South Korean telecom executives have a message for European cousins who have long looked on in envy at the highly connected Asian market: Be careful what you wish for.

South Korea, the world's most wired country with 30 percent of its 50 million mobile users on superfast networks, has inspired many European operators ahead of their own rollout of networks based on LTE, or fourth-generation technology.

But SK Telecom Co Ltd , the country's largest operator with more than half of the market, and second player KT Corp , told Reuters that although the rollout of faster networks had been good for consumers, they were still struggling to make money on the technology 18 months after launch.

"Our European colleagues complain that the explosion in data has not fully happened for them, that it did not come to reality," Suk-Chae Lee, the head of KT Corp, told Reuters at the Mobile World Congress on Tuesday.

"In Korea, they are data crazy. We have unprecedented demand. We cannot handle it. But the issue we have is that they are not willing to pay enough. So, the fundamental problem is, can we make any money out of it?"

South Korea is often held up by European governments as the model they would most like to replicate, with superfast networks enabling millions of people to shop online, communicate and become more productive.

The country has three operators who have been forced to fight for every consumer, spending heavily on marketing and handset subsidies and continually offering more for less to lure in and keep their subscribers.

"The traffic increases but the revenue does not necessarily follow," SK's chief technology officer Jae W Byun said in an interview.

"We have seen about a $13 increase in average revenue per user compared with 3G. So, it is good money, but it may not be enough to justify the huge investment needed in LTE."

Byun added that the profitability of LTE would improve as SK expects the number of subscribers on the technology to grow to 60 percent by the end of the year, from 30 percent currently.

MORE SUBSCRIBERS

European operators such as Telefonica SA and France Telecom SA , weighed down by regulation, competition and economic woes, are betting that the billions of dollars of investment needed for 4G networks will eventually be offset by an increase in customer prices.

Their optimism will be tested when 4G services reach more subscribers in Germany, France, Scandinavia and Britain this year.

In contrast, in the United States AT&T Inc and Verizon Communications Inc are surfing the 4G wave to grow sales and profits, but that has much to do with the fact that they have a combined 70 percent share of their home market.

The lessons from Korea are not all harsh, though.

SK's Byun said rolling out faster networks could enable a mobile operator ranked number two or three to become market leader because the improvement to the consumer is so significant.

But he also noted that once one operator launched 4G, others had to follow quickly or face being left behind.

"If you want to change the game, then take a risk and invest," said Byun.

Customers of both firms on average consume 1.8 to 1.9 gigabytes of data per month, with users spending hours watching video on YouTube, browsing the web and social networking on smartphones and tablets.

According to research from Cisco, an average smartphone user on slower 3G networks consumes around 342 megabytes. South Korea's leap to 1.8 gigabytes followed an 80 percent jump in mobile data traffic on 2G, 3G and 4G networks in 2012.

"LTE is very beneficial to the people but still the big question remains, can we go on?" KT's Suk-Chae Lee said. "It is a blessing to customers but it is a curse on the operators."

The problem will likely get worse, with analysts at Citi predicting 70 percent of the country's mobile users would be on 4G networks by 2014.

SK says it cannot predict when the network will break even because it depends on marketing costs. Its rival noted that with technology developing so quickly, companies have to continually develop new infrastructure, giving less time to recoup the cost.

"The question remains, how do you build out a network while ensuring that the builder gets a minimum return for their investment?" KT's Suk-Chae Lee said. "It is a dilemma."

(AP) ? Trevor Mbakwe had 21 points and 12 rebounds to help Minnesota take down No. 1 Indiana 77-73 on Tuesday night, the seventh time the top-ranked team in The Associated Press' poll has lost a game this season.

Andre Hollins added 16 points for the Gophers (19-9, 7-8 Big Ten), who outrebounded Cody Zeller and the Hoosiers by a whopping 44-30 and solidified their slipping NCAA tournament case with an emphatic performance against the Big Ten leaders. The fans rushed the court as the last seconds ticked off, the first time that's happened here in years.

Zeller was held to nine points with four turnovers for the Hoosiers (24-4, 12-3), who have held the No. 1 ranking for 10 of 17 polls this season including the last four. Victor Oladipo scored 16 points, but 14 of the 17 points by Jordan Hulls came before halftime.

Mbakwe, a sixth-year senior, posted his conference-leading seventh double-double. At 24 years old, he was a man among boys in many ways in this game, dominating both ends of the court when the Gophers needed him most. Minnesota had 23 offensive rebounds.

Elliott Eliason, who played every bit as well as Zeller, the slender sophomore in the post for the visitors, scored seven straight points for Minnesota to tie the game at 46 shortly after Oladipo's reverse layup had given the Hoosiers a 44-36 lead, their biggest of the game.

Hollins, who missed eight of his first nine shots, scraped off a high screen by Eliason to pull up for a 3-pointer and give the Gophers a 51-48 lead underneath the 9-minute mark. Mbakwe got a rebound to keep a key possession alive then grabbed another board to set up his off-balance bank shot for a 56-53 lead for Minnesota with 7:22 left.

Mbakwe was called for a loudly questioned blocking foul, his fourth, with 4:39 remaining on Zeller's fast-break layup that put the Hoosiers up 59-58. But Austin Hollins answered with a pump-fake layup that drew a foul for a three-point play and a 61-59 lead for the Gophers.

Joe Coleman's fast-break dunk with 2:35 left lifted Minnesota to a 68-61 edge, enough of a cushion to withstand a couple of 3-pointers by Christian Watford and one by Hulls in the closing minutes.

Mbakwe, who played for Indiana coach Tom Crean when they were at Marquette in 2007-08, has had some of his better games against the Hoosiers. This was his best. He gave the Gophers and their home crowd a double-shot of energy early with 10 points in the first 6? minutes, plus a jarring block of Zeller's inside shot that knocked the 7-footer to the court. Coach Tubby Smith took Mbakwe out for a breather, though, and the Hoosiers went on a 10-0 run capped by another behind-the-arc swish from Hulls.

Zeller, Indiana's leading scorer and the second-best shooter in the Big Ten behind Oladipo, was 0 for 4 from the field in the first half with two turnovers, two fouls and two points. Mbakwe picked up his second foul when Oladipo drew contact with 4:02 left before the break and sat until the buzzer. The Gophers scored only three points in the last 7 minutes of the half.

The Hoosiers started the week with a two-game lead in the loss column over Michigan State, Michigan and Wisconsin, poised for their first outright Big Ten regular season championship since going 17-1 in 1993 during Bob Knight's heyday as coach. With home games against Iowa and Ohio State, Indiana has a chance to clinch the title before the finale at Michigan on March 10.

Six weeks ago, this game looked like one of the many marquee matchups that have marked Big Ten play this season, with a conference as strong as it's been in maybe decades. But while the Hoosiers kept winning after their 88-81 hold-on-at-the-end victory on Jan. 12 over then-No. 8 Minnesota, the Gophers sputtered.

Their half-court offense in particular has caused trouble, with an inability to solve zone defenses and a glaring lack of confidence, identity or purpose on so many possessions over the last few weeks. Their struggles were never more pronounced than in their last two games, in defeat by 21 points at Iowa and 26 points at Ohio State. Even on this night, despite the significant improvement, they looked lost at times when Mbakwe wasn't on the court.

So here they were after a much-needed weekend break in the schedule, back on their uniquely raised home court and trying desperately to boost spirits that have sagged under the weight of eight losses in their previous 11 games. Smith even had the team meet with a sports psychologist. Over their last 10 games, they averaged only 57 points and hadn't topped 58 in five games since Feb. 3. After being ranked in 11 straight polls, the Gophers didn't get one vote this week.

Coen Brothers teaming with Angelina Jolie on "Unbroken"

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - The Coen Brothers will rewrite the script for "Unbroken," a Universal Pictures spokesman told TheWrap.

However, Joel and Ethan Coen, the outr? minds behind "Fargo" and "No Country for Old Men" won't slide behind the director's chair on the project. Those duties will fall to Angelina Jolie, who previously directed "In The Land of Blood and Honey" (2011), a romantic drama set against the backdrop of the Bosnian War.

William Nicholson ("Les Mis?rables") had turned in an earlier draft of the screenplay to "Unbroken."

The film is an adaptation of Laura Hillenbrand's 2010 non-fiction account of a former Olympic track star's astounding quest to survive imprisonment as a prisoner of war after his plane crashes in the Pacific theater during World War II.

The book was a bestseller, and Hillenbrand has had great success mining similar true-life tales of uplift in the past. Her book "Seabiscuit: An American Legend" provided the basis for an Oscar-nominated 2003 film starring Tobey Maguire.

The Coen Brothers typically are possessive of their screenplays, although they do have another script-for-hire film coming out this year with "Gambit." The remake of the 1966 heist film stars Colin Firth and Cameron Diaz and was directed by Michael Hoffman ("Soapdish").

Earlier this month, CBS Films acquired U.S. distribution rights to the brothers' next film "Inside Llewyn Davis," which will look at the Greenwich Village folk scene in the 1960s. The film is expected to be released theatrically in the second half of this year.

The Coen Brothers are represented by UTA. The Hollywood Reporter first reported their hire for "Unbroken."

Giving back through volunteering is good for your heart, even at a young age, according to University of British Columbia researchers.

For their study, published today in the journal JAMA Pediatrics, researchers from UBC's Faculty of Education and Department of Psychology wanted to find out how volunteering might impact physical health among adolescents.

"It was encouraging to see how a social intervention to support members of the community also improved the health of adolescents," says Hannah Schreier, who conducted this research during her doctoral studies at UBC.

Researchers split 106 Grade 10 students from an urban, inner-city Vancouver high school into two groups a group that volunteered regularly for 10 weeks and a group that was wait-listed for volunteer activities. The researchers measured the students' body mass index (BMI), inflammation and cholesterol levels before and after the study. They also assessed the students' self-esteem, mental health, mood, and empathy.

The volunteer group of students spent one hour per week working with elementary school children in after-school programs in their neighborhood. After 10 weeks they had lower levels of inflammation and cholesterol and lower BMIs than the students who were wait-listed.

"The volunteers who reported the greatest increases in empathy, altruistic behaviour and mental health were the ones who also saw the greatest improvements in their cardiovascular health," says Schreier, now a postdoctoral fellow at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York.

Cardiovascular disease is one of the leading causes of mortality in Canada and the United States. The first signs of the disease can begin to appear during adolescence. Previous studies show that psychosocial factors, such as stress, depression and wellbeing, play a role in the disease.

The great illusion of the self

(Image: Darren Hopes)

As you wake up each morning, hazy and disoriented, you gradually become aware of the rustling of the sheets, sense their texture and squint at the light. One aspect of your self has reassembled: the first-person observer of reality, inhabiting a human body.

As wakefulness grows, so does your sense of having a past, a personality and motivations. Your self is complete, as both witness of the world and bearer of your consciousness and identity. You.

This intuitive sense of self is an effortless and fundamental human experience. But it is nothing more than an elaborate illusion. Under scrutiny, many common-sense beliefs about selfhood begin to unravel. Some thinkers even go as far as claiming that there is no such thing as the self.

In these articles, discover why "you" aren?t the person you thought you were.

HP to make $169 Android tablet, eschewing Windows

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) ? Hewlett-Packard Co. is making a tablet computer that uses Google's Android operating system, steering clear of Microsoft's latest tablet-oriented version of Windows, the company said Sunday.

The HP Slate 7 will have a 7-inch screen, making it similar in size to the Amazon Kindle Fire. It will cost $169 when it goes on sale in April in the U.S.

Most tablet makers, including Samsung and Amazon, have chosen Android as the best and cheapest operating system for products that can compete against Apple's iPad. HP previously made a tablet based on Palm's WebOS software, but the effort fizzled. The company also makes a more powerful tablet with PC-type components for the corporate market, which runs a PC-style version of Windows 8. It hasn't produced a tablet using Windows RT, Microsoft's product for iPad-type tablets.

"When we looked at creating a real killer product for consumers, a very portable, very entertainment-focused device, we thought that Android was the better choice," said Alberto Torres, who signed on as head of HP's mobile devices division five months ago. Previously, he worked for cellphone maker Nokia Corp. "Of course, we continue to work closely with Microsoft on other products as well."

Torres didn't rule out using Windows RT in the future, saying the company plans a broad portfolio of tablets tailored toward different types of buyers. But HP's choice of Android for a consumer device and Windows 8 for a corporate tablet leaves little room for Windows RT, which Microsoft hopes will expand the reach of Windows beyond corporate tablets.

Torres said the Slate 7 will use a relatively "vanilla" version of Android. The company is avoiding the interface modifications Asian manufacturers apply and the deeper changes imposed by Amazon and Barnes & Noble for their tablets. The Slate 7 will ship with the ability to talk to printers, HP's forte. At $169 the device is aggressively priced, costing half of what Apple charges for an iPad mini.

HP made the announcement on the eve of Mobile World Congress, the wireless industry's annual trade show, which starts Monday in Barcelona, Spain.

Competitor Samsung Electronics announced a new tablet earlier Sunday, to launch in the April to June time frame. The Galaxy Note 8.0 will be slightly larger than the Slate 7. It will run Android and accept pen input.

Man takes dog for a walk, returns to house engulfed in inferno

By Donna Rapado, NBCMiami.com

A man who took his dog out for a walk around the block Saturday night returned home moments later to a raging inferno with flames of up to 30 feet bursting through his roof.

The fire was so bad, it destroyed the home. "There's no positive to this,? said homeowner Dave Rudra, who watched his home of 10 years go up in flames. ?I don't know what's going on."

Police and fire arson investigators spent the day Sunday sifting through the house, looking for evidence to help them identify what caused the fire. Chief Jorge Mara, with Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, said the fire had been so large, firefighters needed to make sure it didn?t spread to other homes.?

?There was such heavy flames involved, they felt it was too dangerous for guys to go in and make an initial interior attack so they decided to go to a defensive mode and protect the houses on either side," Mara said.

Sunday afternoon, Rudra returned to the home and spoke to investigators. He wanted to see whether he can salvage anything inside the home, including pictures of his three children.

"The only thing that I really care about is my children's pictures and the videotapes,? he said. ?Everything else can be replaced, and that's all I want."

He said the fire left him with nothing but the pants he wore. "They've already torn it down with tractors and everything,? he said. ?So even if there was anything left, it's all debris now.?

As Sunday's daylight disappeared and with damage and debris still left to sift through, fire investigators said they planned to return to the destroyed property Monday.

?Having him with me was so fun and special, I couldn't wait for everyone to meet him!

My Design tip: Using vintage elements will give the shower a style that will be unique and memorable.

Have a beautiful weekend,

Bobby Valentine takes small college job

Former Boston Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine has been hired as the athletics director at Sacred Heart University.

The university in Fairfield, Conn. said Friday that Valentine's appointment will be formally announced next Tuesday.

Valentine was fired in October after just one season in Boston, when the Red Sox went 69-93.

See a slideshow of Valentine's time in Boston

He managed the Texas Rangers from 1985-92 and the Mets from 1996-02, leading New York to the 2000 World Series. After managing in Japan, he joined ESPN as an analyst. Last month he signed on to be the part-time co-host of a weekday talk show for NBC Sports Radio that debuts in April.

Valentine is a native of Stamford, Conn. who worked as the director of public safety for the city before taking the job with the Red Sox.

Sacred Heart fields 31 varsity teams ? 17 for women and 14 for men. The Pioneers upgraded their varsity programs to NCAA Division I status in September 1999. They are a member of the Northeast Conference. The school's baseball team, in fact, has made consecutive trips to the NCAA tournament.

A year ago at this time, Valentine was in Fort Myers, Fla., prepping the Red Sox for what they thought was a turnaround season. Valentine had taken over for Terry Francona, Ben Cherington had taken over for former general manager Theo Epstein, and the new-look Red Sox were off and running.

It never panned out. The chemistry never clicked, the Red Sox struggled through long stretches of the season, suffered a crop of injuries and finished in last place in the American League East.

Miko Peled, author of The General?s Son: Journey of an Israeli in Palestine offers candid, critical views of Israel?s treatment of Palestinians, from 1948 to the present.? Will Durst comments on the civil war inside the Republican party.? Peled holds Israeli and American passports and is a professional martial artist who lives in San Diego.? His book details his heritage: grandfather was a Zionist leader and signer of Israel?s Declaration of Independence, father was a young officer in the 1948 war and a top general in the 1967 war (who had a second career as a professor and back-channel negotiator with the Palestinians).? Peled served in the Israeli military as required and became an activist after his 13-year-old niece was killed in a suicide attack in Jerusalm.

We open with a chat about the Oscar-nominated documentary 5 Broken Cameras and its filmmaker, Emad Burnat from the West Bank Village of Bi?lin.? Peled knows Burnat and his brother Iyad (who was interviewed in our podcast 701, Jan 22, 2013) and talked about Emad?s mistreatment by US Immigration at LAX when he flew in for the Oscars.? Bi?lin is just one of the places that Peled has visited in his support for Palestinian rights.

Then we mention another Oscar-nominated film, The Gatekeepers, which presents 6 former Israeli Shin Bet chiefs.? Peled slams them as hypocrites, and says they should be tried at the International Criminal Court, not feted at the Oscars.

He is equally blunt about the Israeli government, Obama?s upcoming visit to Israel, and his observations when he recently visited Gaza by using a tunnel from Egypt. And he supports a one-state solution with Palestinians as full citizens.

At 40:45, Will Durst pops by to talk about the struggle inside the GOP.

Grey Muzzle Reaches $250,000 in Grants to Save Senior Dogs ...

By Chandra Conway, Grey Muzzle Board of Directors? Member for Pet News and Views

? ?Since 2008, The Grey Muzzle Organization has awarded $257,000 in grants to nonprofit organizations working to help homeless and at-risk elderly dogs. Grey Muzzle has supported 38 nonprofit organizations and is currently funding lifesaving efforts in 20 states.

Annual Grey Muzzle grants average $2,100 each and many grants have been renewed?nine nonprofit organizations have each received more than $10,000 in funding.

?We?re proud that we?re able to continue to fund many of these great groups year after year, helping them build long-term programs to benefit elderly dogs,? says Grey Muzzle board member Julie Dudley, who founded the national all-volunteer nonprofit.

Grey Muzzle believes that every senior dog deserves to live out their golden years, months, weeks, or even days, in a place of love, security, and peace. Grey Muzzle makes grants in the following categories:

    • Adoptable Dogs Medical Care
    • Hospice and Long-term Care
    • ?Seniors for Seniors? Adoption Programs
    • Keep Dogs With Owners? Assistance
    • Community Outreach/Therapy Dog Programs

Here are examples of how some of the organizations that receive grants are putting the funds to work for senior dogs in need:

    Adoptable Dogs Medical Care

This category includes grants made to nonprofit shelters and rescues for adoptable senior dogs? medical care.

In Vineland, NJ, Cumberland County SPCA & Animal Shelter Foster Care Coordinator Maria Stoerrle reports that the staff has a new attitude towards senior dogs, thanks to Grey Muzzle support. Over an 11-month stretch, CCSPCA?s Red Collar Society aided 62 senior dogs. The program provides medical treatment and then outreach to either keep senior dogs with their families or focus on adoption, foster or transfer to no-kill shelters or rescues.

?Staff often believed that a senior dog was older than they actually were, or their health was worse because of their demeanor in the shelter,? writes Stoerrle. ?Having the ability to treat and get these dogs into foster homes and monitor their progress has proven that while a senior dog may be more prone to depression in a kennel environment, there are very few seniors who won?t have a wonderful quality of life in a home environment.?

Grants to rescues for adoptable dogs? medical care allow at-risk senior dogs in shelters to receive treatment and be moved to a safe foster home environment. In Chicagoland, the ?Increase the Adoptability of Senior Dogs? program run by Young at Heart Pet Rescue provides full-scale vet care as well as grooming and the use of professional photography and video for dogs? profiles.

YAH Executive Director Dawn Kemper recalls Jayden, a 10-12-year-old Boxer mix who was one of the ten senior dogs in the organization?s care in 2011 to be aided by Grey Muzzle funding.

?Sweet and docile, she became a fast favorite at the local animal control and as her time grew short, the staff began to contact every boxer rescue and no-kill animal shelter in the area to save her,? says Kemper. ?The response? Every single organization said she was too old to be adopted. Her brilliant smile and endearing personality proved to us that she was adoptable?she just needed a chance!?

A visit to the vet found that Jayden needed a teeth cleaning and thyroid medication plus a lumpectomy that proved benign. Kemper says a professional photo shoot helped Jayden?s adoption profile shine and she has found her forever home.

?Jayden has become our not-so-little lap dog and we?re so happy to have her here with us,? shares Jayden?s new mom, Misty. ?The vet says she?s in good health and looks great for her age.?

Grey Muzzle grant recipient Old Dog Haven?s Final Refuge program provided Annie (Lil Bit), a 13-pound Chihuahua/Terrier mix diagnosed with advanced lymphoma, end-of-life love and care.

    ?

    ??Keep Dogs With Owners? Assistance

?Keep Dogs With Owners? grants assist programs, typically run by a shelter, provides food and medical care for pets of low-income owners.

The Sergey Foundation?s Judy Larkin says Grey Muzzle funding has been key to her Bellingham, WA-based organization?s mission to keep senior dogs healthy and with their families. ?The cost of veterinary bills increases exponentially as a dog grows older,? says Larkin. ?This hits the senior population extremely hard.?

Karin Frye?s senior Belgian Malinois, Baldo, received surgery for a torn anterior cruciate ligament thanks to The Sergey Foundation and a Grey Muzzle grant. Read their story.

?Research shows that pets enrich our quality of life?physically and emotionally,? says Grey Muzzle President Jenny Kachnic. ?One of Grey Muzzle?s most important goals for 2013 is to help low-income owners, especially senior citizens, keep their old dogs despite financial instability by providing grants to programs that will assist them with veterinary care, food, and supplies for their much-loved senior dogs.?

    Astronomers discover smallest planet ever

Orbiting a star some 215 light-years away, Kepler-37b is smaller than Mercury, the smallest planet in our solar system.?

    By Elizabeth Howell,?SPACE.com / February 20, 2013

An artist's conception of the tiny alien planet Kepler-37b, which is slightly larger than Earth's moon and orbits its host star every 13 days. It likely has a surface temperature of in excess of 400 deg C (700 deg F).

The discovery of a strange new world about the size of Earth's moon has shattered the record for the smallest known alien planet, scientists say.

The newfound alien planet Kepler-37b is the first?exoplanet?discovered to be smaller than Mercury. It whips around its parent star every 13 days and has a roasting surface temperature of about 800 degrees Fahrenheit (427 Celsius), researchers said. It not a promising contender for life, they added.

Astronomers found Kepler-37b and two other, larger planets (called Kepler-37c and Kepler-37d) orbiting a star about 215 light-years from Earth using NASA's prolific Kepler space telescope. Finding such a small exoplanet with the?Kepler spacecraft?was a stretch, but some attributes of Kepler-37b's parent star made the discovery possible.

The star has few sunspots and is bright relative to its planet, making it easier for the Kepler spacecraft to spot the telltale dimming that takes place when a planet passes in front of its star, which scientists call a transit. That method revealed not just the presence of Kepler-37b, but its two siblings in orbits farther from the parent star than 37b. [Gallery: The?Smallest Alien Planets]

"There are not many signals masking the transit," study leader Thomas Barclay of NASA's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif., told SPACE.com. "What makes this exceptional was this dip of brightness was just 22 parts per million."

    Too hot to host life

Kepler-37b and its siblings, 37c and 37d, are likely uninhabitable, scientists said. All three planets lie close to their parent star, well inside the Earth-sun distance (called astronomical units, or AU). One astronomical unit is about 93 million miles (150 million kilometers).

The moon-size Kepler-37b is so close to its parent star, at just 0.10 AU, that it likely has no atmosphere or liquid water on its surface. The next planet out, Kepler-37c, is slightly smaller than Earth and may have an atmosphere, but it orbits the star at 0.14 AU ? well outside the star's habitable zone in which liquid water could exist on the surface.

The biggest planet in the newfound?alien solar system?is Kepler-37d. It is about twice the size of Earth and orbits the parent star at a distance of 0.2 AU.

"This could hold an atmosphere, but it's unlikely to be a rocky planet ? more likely to be gassy ? simply because of its size. It could hold some kind of liquid at the surface," Barclay said.

The next step, Barclay added, will be to look for Mercury-sized exoplanets at greater distances away from the host star Kepler 37. More planets could be orbiting the star and await discovery.

"We're looking at it very carefully," Barclay said. "There's nothing yet, but something may appear in the data."

    Starlight tells the tale

Barclay and his team took great care to confirm the existence of planets around Kepler-37. Theresearchers knew that a dip in the star's brightness identified by the Kepler spacecraft could have come from several factors, most notably another?star passingin front of the Kepler-37 target. So they ran a computer simulation to see if the newfound planet candidates could be false positives.

Using a tool called Blender from the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, the researchers simulated several false positive scenarios in order to eliminate them. The results made researchers more than 99 percent confident that the planet candidates are actual planets, Barclay said.

The science team managed to obtain a close approximation of the size of the Kepler-37 star, in addition to spotting its planetary retinue.

The star's quiescent nature allowed the researchers to measure it with astroseismology, a technique that uses acoustic oscillations on the star's surface similar to how researchers probe the Earth's interior with seismic devices during earthquakes.

The uncertainty for a star's size is typically 20 to 30 percent, Barclay said. In this case, using astroseismology, the researchers narrowed the uncertainty to 3 percent.

Measurements showed Kepler-37 is about 75 percent the size of Earth's sun and 80 percent as massive. This places the star within the same "class" of stars as our sun.

The $600 million Kepler mission launched in March 2009, and has found more than 2,740 alien worlds so far. The spacecraft searches for small dips in stars' light caused by orbiting planets that pass in front of them periodically, diming their brightness.

Detective calls Pistorius a flight risk at bail hearing

PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) ? A detective has testified that Oscar Pistorius is a flight risk and shouldn't be granted bail.

Hilton Botha also said in the star athlete's bail hearing Wednesday that Pistorius illegally possessed .38-caliber ammunition in a safe in his bedroom. Pistorius is charged with premeditated murder for the Valentine's Day shooting death of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp with a 9 mm pistol. The policeman testified that Pistorius did not have a license for a .38-caliber weapon and consequently possession of that ammunition was illegal.

Pistorius argued in a court affidavit Tuesday that the shooting was accidental and he thought the model was an intruder in his home.

The detective says all Pistorius would say after the shooting was "he thought it was a burglar."

Monday reads: iWatch speculation, iOS Podcasts app, Colorado ...

Below, we?ve summarized a few interesting reads for today from around the web.

    iWatch graphic

Jean-Louis Gass?e?s Monday Note on the rumored Apple iWatch:

Gassee discusses the rumored Apple wrist-device in the context of Apple?s other products. Profiling Apple?s current Apple TV business, software business, and hardware acumen, Gassee believes that the so-called ?iWatch? is Apple?s next step of personal computing.

It?s hard to imagine that Apple would merely integrate an existing accessory into a new iPod. Sales of the iPod proper are decelerating, so the iPod-as-iWatch could give the line a much needed boost, but it?s difficult to reconcile the rumors of ?100 people? working on the project if it?s just a retrofit job. Is Apple working on an iWatch that can be experienced as an?Even More Personal?personal computer ? an ?intimate computer?? If so, many questions arise: user interface, sensors, iOS version, new types of apps, connection with other iDevices? And, of course price.?This would be much more interesting than the perennially in-the-future Apple TV set. Of course, iWatch and Apple TV aren?t necessarily mutually exclusive.

Apple is heavily rumored to be working on this wrist computer device. The company reportedly has a team of approximately 100 employees working on the project. (Mockup above via The Guardian)

BuzzFeed?s John Herrman on ?Apple?s Podcast Disaster:?

Herrman summarizes the recent controversies and complaints over Apple?s recently released Podcasts application for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch. The report presents evidence of dislike to the application even from the App Store?s own reviews. Herrman puts the backlash in context with Apple?s pioneering of podcasts in the middle of the last decade. Herrman wonders that if Podcasting was so important to Apple, why hasn?t its app been fixed yet?

More worrying, perhaps, is the simple fact that Apple hasn?t done anything to fix an app that is so obviously in need of help. The company is not short on resources, but appears to have dedicated virtually none to the app that serves as the?sole?official way to download podcasts on iOS. ?At least for my show, about 80% of the listening comes from Apple devices,? says Rubin. One wonders if Apple is treating its podcast app like it did its Remote app, which was reported to have been created by?a team of one.

Apple?s Podcast app was released alongside iOS 6.

ABC7 Denver?s Don Champion on a smash and grab at Boulder Apple Store:

In yet another Apple Store burglary, ABC 7 Denver reports that the Boulder, CO Apple Store was hit for $64,000 worth of merchandise:

Boulder Police said a hooded bandit threw three rocks through the nearly $100,000 custom-made front glass door to break into the store early Saturday morning. Once inside, the man stole almost $64,000 worth of merchandise.?Investigators said laptops, iPads and iPhones were among the display items stolen. An Apple expert said the merchandise is more than likely headed for the black market to be sold.

$100,000 for a glass door sounds outrageous?and is probably a lot more than reality.

Even though Apple is worth the most, Ferrari is claimed to be the most ?powerful? company:

While Apple is constantly releasing new, successful products that have made it the wealthiest company in the world, a new report claims Ferrari is the most ?powerful? global brand:

A case in point is Ferrari, owned by Italian car giant Fiat, that achieved the highest brand rating in the Global 500 despite being a niche sports car manufacturer with a much smaller enterprise value than many of the other global brands in the Top 500.

Notably, Apple Senior VP of Internet Software and Services Eddy Cue sits on Ferrari?s board of directors.

Bright streak of light reported over San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Hours after a meteor exploded over Russia and injured more than 1,000 people and an asteroid passed relatively close to Earth, residents in Northern California reported seeing an unusual flash of light over the San Francisco Bay area that left many startled and thrilled.

The Chabot Space and Science Center in Oakland reports receiving calls describing what appeared to be a fireball flying west Friday night. It's not clear what the object was.

Jonathan Braidman, an instructor at the center, described the object based off reports as likely being a small piece of an asteroid that "somehow" got on a collision course with the earth.

"This is a very common occurrence," Braidman said. "What is uncommon is that it's so close to where people are living."

The center's large telescopes did not pick up the object during a stargazing event, astronomer Gerald McKeegan told KGO-TV. The American Meteor Society at Pennsylvania State University, meanwhile, said it received at least 35 reports of the event, according to operations managers Mike Hankey.

Based on reports, Hankey said it appeared the light streaking in the night sky was a sporadic meteor, or fireball. "Fireballs happen every single night, all around the world," he said.

Experts say smaller meteorites hit Earth five to 10 times a year but large meteors such as the one in Russia are rarer. Another meteor landed in the Bay Area in October and caused a loud sonic boom.

"The media attention on the Russian thing got people's attention, so they're more likely to notice things in the sky," said Mike Hankey, operations manager of the American Meteor Society.

While Friday's night fireball received a lot of attention in the San Francisco Bay area, Braidman notes about 15,000 tons of debris from asteroids enter the earth's atmosphere every year.

"Usually these things break up into small pieces and are difficult to find," he said.
