Facilitating fundamentals of ITIL ? Unisa Online ? College of ...

With the Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) rapidly becoming the world-wide de facto standard for delivering high quality IT services, Unisa?s Centre for Software Engineering (CENSE) hosted a three-day workshop from 25 to 27 June 2012.

The workshop and certification examination covered fundamentals of the latest 2011 Edition of ITIL version 3. Topics included comprehensive presentations of the five phases of the Service Lifecycle, and of the processes and functions associated with these phases. The course also included several in-class exercises designed to demonstrate how ITIL concepts can be applied to actual work environments, as well as two sample certification exams.

Workshop facilitator, infrastructure expert and world acclaimed author, Rich Schiesser, also spent two days in the School of Computing on the Florida campus to assist with the recurriculation of the BTech degree to an ITIL-based qualification. This led to fruitful discussions with lecturers tasked with such recurriculation.

The expected outcomes of this course were for participants to be able to assess their own IT environments as to ITIL maturity, to apply appropriate aspects of the ITIL framework to their particular organisations, and to become certified in the foundations of service management and ITIL version 3 2011 Edition. Much of this was achieved according to Prof Andre Van der Poll, Manager: CENSE, School of Computing, Unisa. ?A questionnaire was drawn up and distributed amongst the 33 delegates and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. The delegates who attended were mainly Unisa ICT staff, ICT staff from the University of Pretoria and staff members from the School of Computing. A certification exam was taken by all delegates at the end of the workshop,? he said.

CENSE plans to host an advanced 5-day ITIL course in 2013, concentrating on three important components of infrastructure, once again with a certification exam at the end of the course.

CENSE pleased by the overwhelmingly positive response from delegates
